Love the badlands!  I grew up next door in MN, but ironically didn't visit until I had moved to CA.

Arctic Circle Monument

Monument to the boundary of the Arctic Circle.  Since the Earth's rotation has a slight wobble that plays out over the years, the monument is designed to be able to be rolled to the correct spot :-)

Thanks, Icelandic horses are very special - very hardy and reportedly a wonderful temperament.  It was fun to see groups of them running or hanging out together, they seemed very social.

Alas our gophers are too big for the cats. I have a dog, however, who will move as much dirt as she needs to to get at one.

And at the peak of the season I catch them in irrigation pipes, sometimes two or three at a time.

It's a problem, but boy howdy can the little bastards eat alfalfa. Even the gophers around here can cut yield around their dens by half.

I can see how they could have been considered pests to the farmers and ranchers in Wyoming, I wish I could eradicate (or at least relocate) the ground squirrels destroying our garden and eating all our fruit (at least they are leaving the citrus, guava and pomegranate trees alone). I know that's South Dakota. Those guys are fat and happy over there.

They were pretty successfully eradicated here, leading to the extinction (almost) of the Black-Footed Ferret, which feeds only on prairie dogs. Ferrets are still on the nearly-lost-them list, and a BFF clone was just born... they're doing everything they can think of to increase the population but the #1 thing is returning prairie dogs to the habitat, and in the last few years I've seen them in my area. I never saw one in Wyoming before, only SoDak.
