My first real camera was a Twin Lens Reflex!   My grandfather gave it to me - no auto anything, didn't even have a meter.  "Sunny 16 rule".

Mainly just got lucky to have the right conditions.  The lightning woke me up in the middle of the night, so I grabbed my tripod and went outside.  There was no rain or wind and it was warm, so I spent an hour taking long exposures, hoping to capture a sequence.  It took a lot of trial and error to get the focus and exposure right - everything has to be manual: focus, time, aperture, and ISO.  I’d open the shutter, wait for a strike or 1 minute, whichever came first, and repeat. Then some contrast adjustments and noise reduction in Lightroom.

really nice capture!

i was on a motorcycle trip camping in Moab in the mid 90‘s and had the same revelation.  That was also the first time I ever saw a satellite, these days they're very common.
