You realize, right, that if the President and his minions tell people that voting is a waste of time, they have no other choice but violent insurrection? No other choice.

So what sort of President would encourage violent insurrection, encourage race war, encourage open weapon toting? Someone beholden to those who would like that to happen.

And who would be happy if America fell to violent chaos?

For years now the left has been obsessed with Trump's tax returns, as if once they can read them they will find the smoking gun that will cause his support to evaporate. The NYT got access*. Turns out they have allies who have access to tax data, which they have attempted to weaponize. That weapon is a dud.

This release will change (round numbers here) approximately zero minds. If you hated him before you hate him now. If you saw him as a heroic warrior battling an entrenched partisan media oligarchy you still do. That Donald Trump pays as little in taxes as humanly possible is not a surprise, and if you're looking for a villain here I've got one: the US Congress.

The tax code is absurdly complex because Congress can't stop using it as a tool to manipulate people into behaving as they would like. They simultaneously recognize that taxes are incentives to change behavior and refuse to recognize that taxes cause people to change behaviors. The dodges Trump used were written into law by the very people angry at him for using them. Surprise! When you plant a briar patch Br'er Rabbit will hide in it.

*To tax data, not the actual returns, which means it came from inside some government agency, which is supposed to hold such information confidential. I know this doesn't bother you, but it should.

Popular opinion for and against Trump is baked in. You're right, the tax revelations aren't going to change people's minds.

The first New York Times article seems to use the terms "tax data" and "tax returns" interchangeably. Your assumption that the information about Trump's taxes "came from inside some government agency" does not seem to be necessarily correct. That information could have leaked from law firms and accounting firms that worked on Trump's taxes. Or someone personally close to Trump could have been the leaker: remember that Mary Trump was the source of a previous leak of Trump's tax records.

Even if the tax information "came from inside some government agency", the NYT has stated explicitly that it obtained the information legally. Also—should we have been bothered by the Pentagon Papers, which "came from inside some government agency" and were classified as "Top Secret"?

The IRS has safeguards in place to protect against unauthorized access to and transmission of taxpayer data. Those safeguards helped reveal that there was an attempt to gain access to the IRS's storage of Trump's tax records four years ago. And again in 2017. WaPo also has a piece on those safeguards although I very much doubt the IRS's system is unhackable. Still, getting hold of almost two decades of Trump's returns would be a remarkable security breach at the IRS, given the public interest in Trump and his taxes as well as previous attempts to illegally gain access to those records.

The NYT has an editorial board op-ed decrying the complexity of the US tax code as well as its tilted playing field dramatically favoring the very rich. Yet Trump's "dodges" as you put it may very well be illegal and even criminal.

Nick Akerman, former assistant special Watergate prosecutor,  notes that the payment of consulting fees to Ivanka Trump when she was still "a Trump employee" was an instance of a fairly common type of tax evasion (a federal felony punishable by a five-year prison term). Akerman also states in that video interview that it appears "Trump has done a whole series of activities that could qualify as tax fraud..." Akerman believes that Donald and Ivanka could go to jail.

Perhaps but Biden has all the qualifications and track history to perform for and make substantive gains for the USA on the world stage.

Biden is old school.  For him, politics is the art of the possible.  The USA could use this kind of old school ready to compromise political style right about now.

Biden is a natural for restoring the US brand abroad.    Biden is best buds with Obama.   World political elites loved Barack Obama.  Still do.  They easily forgave him his policy misses because they all understand the limitations of the presidency.

The decency, the integrity, the warmth, the recognition of the validity of different views, the respect for different views.....    the goodwill this generates could be measured in the trillions.

Americans need to screw their heads back on tight and recognize that the big market and economic opportunities going forward for both trade and investment will occur in large countries with diverse, non-white populations.  Biden cannot not only do this and successfully ride on the coattails of the president he once served; he also has access to a well-informed, well-connected network should the need arise.

Yes.

I feel sorry for the guy; he must be under a huge amount of stress.  Oil exploration and politics can be stressful occupations.   Clinging to a sinking ship can be rather stressful.

I like what someone else suggested: a mocking tone. Trump has shown that he's incapable of resisting an insult, no matter how inane the comeback. "No puppet. You're the puppet!"

So, I would think that a Biden who's above it all, possibly focusing on how much Trump has failed and mocking him for his incompetence - without bothering to respond to the inevitable attacks on Biden's health, brain, Hunter. Why respond or defend against that while on stage?

Continue, at all times, to insult him and his daughter and his son-in-law about how bad a job they've done. (Biden's kid is not part of his office; Trump has hired his daughter and SIL and that makes them fair game, whereas Baron is absolutely not.)

i agree, and hope we see that.

Think of it as non-violent civil disobedience.    It was bound to happen.  The current president goes out of his way to disrespect and insult people.  He eagerly makes enemies out of what are supposed to be 'friends' and 'allies'.

Otherwise, all your points are well taken.  Frankly, you could trace just about every issue that angers Trump supporters back to Democratic Party policy fails.

A reformed fox guarding the hen house, if you will. Part of draining the swamp. Fast-forward. What has Trump done to even try to do this? He and the Republicans passed a tax “reform” act but it did not touch any of these loopholes. Why not? What happened?

Secondly, these stories call into question his boasts of being a fabulously successful businessman — something else that was central to his 2016 campaign.

We do not know whether Trump has done anything illegal with his tax filings, but that is not the only standard. One commentator last night said that someone with the kind of debt Trump apparently has would have trouble getting a security clearance. Trump, of course, is the elected President so that is not at issue.. Remember, though, that there was some delay in Jarad Kushner getting his security ckearance.

As I said in an earlier post, Trump could choose to clear things up by releasing his tax returns and offering explanations as necessary. That he has fought so long and so hard not to release his returns tells me that there is something within them that he does not want revealed. He is not a man who stands on principle.

Some might even dare to whisper "crooked." Nice bit of projection there, Mr. Trump!

Think of the audience: paunchy men with American flag bandannas and white wife-beaters with a bandolier over each shoulder, knives and rifles coming out of every pocket, looking furtively around for socialist infiltrators or people of color so they can show them what 'Merica's all about.
