I was basing my initial post on that one article; I guess it depends on which news outlet.  The NY Times headline is more about Danish "bewilderment and anger" over his cancellation, not his possible motivations.  The BBC says it's "amid a spat" over the sale - which seems to suggest it was because he felt insulted.  Others are somewhere in between, generally citing Denmark's surprise or displeasure.  Other than the BBC piece, I haven't seen a headline from the so-called "MSM", which suggests he cancelled the trip because he felt insulted.  I'm not denying they're out there; I just haven't seen one.

The 2 headlines for the story in today’s Washington Post (front page and jump page): “With no deal in Greenland, Trump cancels Denmark trip” and “After Greenland deal is derided as ‘absurd,’ Trump backs out of trip to Denmark”

The fact that our Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen called his idea of the United States buying Greenland “absurd” probably ticked him off. LOL! Or that Obama will be visiting in September - he doesn’t want his reception to be compared to Obama’s.  How could Trump even think Greenland was for sale! He thinks he can get anything he wants, and he is behaving like a school boy!

Here's one view of it:  https://www.theguardian.com/us...

You will probably see Mette Frederiksen's press briefing later, I think she was being very polite and diplomatic.

“The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!” Mr. Trump added on Twitter.

Seems this is a good example of the absurdity on both ends - Trump and MSM.

I'm not clear on the media's absurdity in this particular episode, though they have certainly exhibited it many other times, and will continue to do so.  The fact that he's even thought of "buying" Greenland is absurd enough; admitting that he was serious about it in a tweet is beyond absurd.

There is speculation recounted in the media because Trump abruptly cancelled the state visit without explanation other than leaving a tweet to decipher. His tweet does suggest that the visit was cancelled by him because the statement by the Denmark PM that Greenland was not for sale rendered the trip unnecessary. Of course, this only makes sense if the Danes had known previously that such a proposal was the reason for Trump’s visit and had then changed their minds — and there is no indication of that; in fact, everything coming from Denmark indicated that the Danes were taken completely by surprise by the notion of the U.S, wanting to purchase Greenland.

Yes, nice understatement.  Trump risks building even more disdain in the main stream media.   That might not matter for his base but it does for swing voters.  Well, that has always been my assumption.

It must be his 'us versus them' vision that coincides with him wanting to lump and stereotype people as opposed to recognizing the complex heterogeneity of peoples.  Either that or he figures out how political relationships 'ought' to be and then when he is inevitably disappointed he tries to fix his understanding of the world by cajoling people to conform to his vision.

We may all go down in flames but at least we will all go down hugely entertained.
