With luck, President Trump will engineer a recession.  Why luck?  Because that is the surest way of voting him out of office.  Short-term pain for long-term gain.   -w

U.S. manufacturing activity growth near 10-year low: Markit

2 MIN READ

(Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing growth sputtered in May, measuring its weakest pace of activity in nearly a decade and new orders fell for the first time since August 2009 as the U.S.-China trade war intensified, data from IHS Markit showed on Thursday.

In its “flash” Purchasing Managers Index for May, Markit said its U.S. Manufacturing PMI declined to 50.6 from a final reading of 52.6 in April, marking the lowest level since September 2009. Wall Street economists polled by Reuters had a consensus forecast of 52.5.

A reading above 50 indicates growth.

The weakness in manufacturing was mirrored to a large degree in the services sector, where Markit’s flash Services Business Activity Index dropped to 50.9 this month from 53.0 in April, the lowest since February 2016. Economists had forecast a reading of 53.2.

The combined softness in the two readings brought Markit’s overall U.S. Composite Output Index to 50.9, the lowest since March 2016, from 53.0 last month.

“Growth of business activity slowed sharply in May as trade war worries and increased uncertainty dealt a further blow to order book growth and business confidence,” IHS Markit Chief Business Economist Chris Williamson said in a statement.

President Trump has personally and repeatedly urged the head of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to award a border wall contract to a North Dakota construction firm whose top executive is a GOP donor and frequent guest on Fox News, according to four administration officials.

In phone calls, White House meetings and conversations aboard Air Force One during the past several months, Trump has aggressively pushed Dickinson, N.D.-based Fisher Industries to Department of Homeland Security leaders and Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, the commanding general of the Army Corps, according to the administration officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal discussions. The push for a specific company has alarmed military commanders and DHS officials.

Senior military officers rebel against Trump plan to pardon troops accused of war crimes
By DAVID S. CLOUD

——————————-

My comment:   The strategic consequences of that pardon would be mind boggling.  The article focuses on the impact on US service personnel.  Blowback against American civilian targets should be included with the worries.

Justin Amash Is Right About Impeachable Conduct

The grounds for removing a president extend beyond statutory violations that could be proven in a criminal trial.

Justin Amash thinks Donald Trump is guilty of "impeachable conduct," and he is absolutely right. Impeachable conduct is whatever the House of Representatives decides it is, a point the president's defenders and some of his critics seem determined to obscure.

The House impeached Bill Clinton for lying under oath about oral sex, and the conduct described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report is more troubling and consequential, even if it does not amount to a crime that could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. When Amash, a five-term Michigan congressman, became the first Republican legislator to make that point, the reaction revealed how determined his colleagues are to evade their responsibilities.

Mitt Romney, the Utah senator and former Republican presidential nominee who a month ago said he was "sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection" detailed by Mueller, this week praised Amash's "courageous statement" but added that he disagreed with his conclusion. Romney argued that "you just don't have the elements" to "make a case for obstruction of justice."

You saw more things than I did last night.  I was thinking more about what people like Trey Gowdy, John Solomon, Devin Nunes and Sarah Carter had been reporting as of late.

No worries.

You can just keep on believing that Trump colluded with Russia, that no one from the .gov was illegally spying on Trump, the so called Steele Dossier is 100% verified and factual... that the FISA warrants will stand up to scrutiny and that James Comey is still the Last Honest Man In Washington©.  And of course there is no such thing as the Deep State, its just another crazy CT ...

Evidently one of us will be in for a surprise soon.

Cheers !
