The magma from this is coming from a deep source (17 km) which is well below the crust and basically straight from the mantle, which is kind of astonishing for the first flush of an eruption (normally you eruptions pick up pockets of melt along the way or inject into an existing magma lens in the crust before erupting). 

There's some pretty cool live video going on right now from Etna.  The main crater is jetting up to 800m, chucking lava bombs every which way and a satellite crater has opened up at the foot of the cone.
(edit: reports of them hitting 2000m.)

For those of you not aware of the terror of a nuée ardente (also known as pyroclastic flow). They are a ground-hugging, high-speed mass of extremely hot pulverized volcanic rock and gas formed when the eruptive column, shooting up into the sky collapses under its own weight. You can see the volcano to the right of the image. The pyroclastic flow is shooting down its left slope, likely in excess of 100 mph (160 kph). Iceland authorities have put out a warning for the Reykjanes peninsula about a teeny eeeny bitsy witsy eruption that is expected to start in a couple of hours. Might close the airport temporarily but otherwise no major risk expected.

Just for scale, what we are seeing is about 700 meters from the crater to the top of the screen. Some pulses go way beyond the top of the screen but a lot of it is clouded in ash.

Kind of like Old Faithful, just with very hot rock.
