Perennial bs and long since discounted.. plus, volcanoes have been spewing gas pretty constantly (bar the odd igneous province) since time immemorial. The human-induced load is on top of this base load.

I though the correct quote was "a friend who crawls on hot lava is no longer a friend of mine."

Oldoinyo Lengai used to have the most amazing crater plateau made up of little turrets of carbonatite but it unfortunately got destroyed in an eruption. It's truly crazy lava.
But in terms of fast lava, the really dangerous one is Nyiragongo near the city of Goma. The lava is more viscous that carbonatite but the volcano has a whole lake of still very runny lava high up the mountain:

From wikipedia

Between 1894 and 1977 the crater contained an active lava lake. On 10 January 1977, the crater walls fractured, and the lava lake drained in less than an hour. The lava flowed down the flanks of the volcano at speeds of up to 60 km/h (40 mi/h, the fastest lava flow recorded to date)<6> on the upper slopes, overwhelming villages and killing at least 70 people. Within 30 minutes, the lava lake had emptied, flowing north, south, and west of the volcano. The hazards posed by eruptions like this are unique to Nyiragongo. Nowhere else in the world does such a steep-sided stratovolcano contain a lake of such fluid lava.

btw, you can walk on lava without sinking in.. sure the burning soles thing is another issue.

a friendly reminder...

with my limited mental ram/hard drive i tend to generally assume that lava is like a lazy river or slow waterfall and that you could just scoot out of the way

(and the pyroclastic flow/cloud was the only fast moving danger)

which begs the question: can lava haul ass?

answer: yes, most definitely

One of my biggest life-regrets is not pursuing my interest in volcanology.

(I mentioned this to a friend, once, and he replied, "My biggest life-regret is ice." So there's that, I suppose)

In the Shadow of Caesar
On the volcanic eruption that set an ominous stage for the death throes of the Roman Republic.
In short, climate shocks and health catastrophes have always gone hand in hand.

Ummmm sounds like upon further examination that's a big negatory there Mr. Zsun...
but yeah, lava still...

my grandfather always told me

"never underestimate lava!"  (well that and a bunch of other home spun wisdom)

not sure why (he died when i was still pretty young)

however, he did spend a lot of time in alaska

camping, hiking, exploring, etc.
