Interesting story of Larry Yount: a pitcher credited with appearing in one major league game but never threw a pitch. Worlds collide when the article brings in Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn.

And wouldn't you know the puppy woke up during the stretch and I missed it.  It'l probably be on the post show any minute.  I actually felt worse about La Stella leaving than Bryant.  He wasn't a rental and I really liked him.  I also thought he deserved a chance to play everyday somewhere though.  I never did the numbers, but it seemed like his average went up 100 points when there two outs and runners in scoring position.  He was a great pinch hitter.  I was working on a limerick for him that I couldn't come up with a suitable last line for before he left.

  There was a remarkable fella
Whose name it was Tommy La Stella
  He's sit on the bench
But then hit in a pinch

And that was all I had.  I should have gotten help from Zevon.

And they didn't put it in the recap.  If you hadn't made the second one in the ninth I think they would have.  Now I'll have to wait for the rebroadcast.

We all still love him, know he's a rental, and hope he comes back.  We know we can't have them all back though and we've known that for years.  My preference for who gets to stay would be Baez first then Contreras, Rizzo, Bryant in that order and we have Willson through next year.  As you may have noticed, from an aesthetics standpoint I'd much watch a jaw dropping double play than a towering home run.  I didn't see the ceremony, but I'll watch it later.  The one decent thing Ricketts has done lately has been to take all the non-national broadcasts away from the three or four local Chicago stations that were carrying them and create a Cubs network that not only has them ALL but rebroadcasts them all three or four times as well.   A godsend when you have a puppy.  It might be what has allowed me to be so lax about actually getting to the park.  I should add though that Ricketts only gets credit for doing a good thing as long as my local cable continues to carry the network.

Actually I've only made the hajj the required once this year for the first time since I was still working.  As you probably noticed Bob, who is my go to driver, can't take the heat anymore.  This just started after he got heat stroke playing tennis last year.  I may have to limit my bleacher visits to April and September in the future and start slummin' it in the main stands in July.  We both thought too it might be a good year to cut back a little in a vain attempt to send a small message to management, but I had intended to pick it up a bit by now.  The trade deadline took a lot out of me.  Even though I knew it was coming and l was the best thing to do long term for the team the scale and speed of it was breathtaking.  It didn't help that Contreras went on the IL at the same time.  That entire defensively amazing infield that we've grown to love so much over the last five years gone in an instant.  It took a while for the shock to wear off.   I've amended my ancient Cubs fan survey question to "Which was hardest on you?  1969, 2013, or trade deadline 2021".  My brothers were out the season pinned down by job and wife's knee replacement.  I think you know which one I consider a valid excuse.  I should have figured some way to get to Oracle Park this year and I can't even come with an excuse as lame as work.  At any rate I may get to one more this year with a neighbor just because it's the Cards.  It may not come off either though for the same lame excuse as my kid brother.

{#Yes}  I think he has become my favorite color man of all time even though I probably learned more baseball from Steve Stone than anyone other than my dad.  I think my favorite JD line still might be from his very first Cubs broadcast which I've told a couple of times here.  I liked him right away.

Ooh. Very good.

Yeah it didn't take Roberts long to figure out how to work the rules to his advantage. I think there were 8 intentional walks last night. Obviously the visiting team should never allow a good hitter to hit if there's a base open but as long as there's a loophole, Roberts will be the first to exploit it. I'm not complaining, really, about that (the Manfred Man is an all-purpose complaint) because I thought it was fun in a weird way to see 3B Justin Turner make several putouts in shallow Right.

A couple of WOW errors including the Padres forgetting to double-switch so the pitcher's spot came up to bat. 15th inning both teams scored 2! Then the Doyers put it away in the 16th.

Those two teams really have had the most epic games this year.
