On some issues, such as pipelines, the Liberal policies are closer to the Conservative party policies.

This will be interesting to watch.   Canada can become noticeably richer by allowing the Transmountain pipeline as it would allow for more oil in Alberta and Saskatchewan to be sold at global prices as opposed to suffering a large discount.

My view?   Pipelines are the small ecological footprint resource-related activity in British Columbia.   Farmers and ranchers constantly take a toil on many watersheds in the southwest corner of the province.

If anything consumption of dirty fuels such as diesel and gasoline should disciplined.   That is hard to do in North America where so many feel such a strong entitlement to cheap energy (no matter how many Americans and Canadians die on an annual basis) that many were supporting the invasion and occupation of Iraq ..... in the name of cheap energy.

Given your petrol prices, the oil companies must be making an everlovin fortune off sales within the country because it can't all be tax.

Not passing judgement on the environmental impacts of pipelines but exporting resources only serves to raise internal prices which provides little in terms of employent benefit to the country while damaging manufacturing and other high-value industries.

The Conservatives won the popular vote but the Liberals get the first opportunity to form the government.

Gotta love first-past-the-post electoral systems.

I did not listen to the English debate but heard/read that the moderators failed to keep order.

That problem did not occur during the French language debate.  The moderators were merciless.

Two observations:

1.  The anglophone leaders' spoken French is much better than what you might have heard 30, 40 years ago.

2.  Jagmeet Singh's spoken French is very good.  Some Sikh dude in a bright orange turban who speaks French better than all the other anglophone candidates?   Unnerving.  -hehe-

Notes for non-Canadians:   Jagmeet Singh is the leader of the NDP.  New Democratic Party or New Democratic Populists as I like to call them.  This party could end up holding the balance of power if the Liberals are returned with a minority position.

The NDP is a direct descendant of the  Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) that catalyzed the birth and growth of the modern Canadian welfare state.

Folks are scared of gang bangers.   Violent hip hop culture is not well understood.  Or should I describe that as violent, misogynistic inner-city culture?   It has a strong appeal among young First Nations.

Now will Scheer suggest that Canada slow down immigration from the Punjab region of India in order to maybe reduce the rate of targeted shootings in Greater Vancouver?   No.   Targeted shootings make life more interesting, more entertaining.

Besides, sacrificing a few lives of fellow citizens is definitely worthwhile in order to avoid the 'racist label'.

That term is not used (or all that relevant) here, but there is a Conflict of Interest Act. And on occasion a bit of controversy.

Emoluments.  Always nice to stretch the vocabulary.   BTW, I trust everybody could tell by the way he talks that Jagmeet Singh was born and raised in Ontario.  In a suburb of Toronto to be more exact.

Canadians, and this time I will single out English Canadians, have strange attitudes towards corruption. Everybody understands 'gift exchange' and for modest items, that in of itself is not a problem or controversial.

But the rest of the time, it seems that everybody else except English Canadians are corrupt.  People in 3rd world countries are corrupt.  Quebecois are corrupt.  But no, not English Canadians.

For example.  If a provincial biologist who is popular with resident fly fishing anglers receives a number of gifts of fishing tackle from private firms, is that OK?  The anglers who like him thought it was just fine.

Is the partisan gifting of  work to road building and maintenance contractors  in Atlantic Canada acceptable?   Of course it is, as long as they are not French Canadian.

Have you heard of the disaster industry here in this country?  For some communities and many individuals, the wildfires in central British Columbia represented a generous windfall.  Mind you one could argue that this is not corruption but rather tried 'n true political rent-seeking at work.

‘I condemn your racism’: New Democrat MPP Gurratan Singh confronted at Muslim festival
Singh stopped and responded to the man’s anti-Muslim remarks at the event in Mississauga, Ont.

———————————————

My comments.  1) Watch the video.  2)  There are numerous community-specific justice systems in Canada.  Nobody ever complained until Sharia Law became an issue.  3) Ontario Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPP) Gurratan Singh is the brother of the leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) Jagmeet Singh.

How about  "If I lived in Iqaluit with its 24 hour dark winter days, I would drink.  Drink lots, drink constantly.  And yes, I would do pills.  Lots of them. I might take my snowmobile and drive it off a cliff, just for somethin' different to do."
