"Saw-whet owl feathers fluoresce a bright, neon pink under ultraviolet (UV) light due to pigments called porphyrins. The intensity of the glow indicates the age of the feather because the porphyrin pigments break down over time due to sunlight and wear. Newer feathers glow brighter, while older feathers are duller or white, allowing researchers to use this as a method for aging the owls."
