There is important Covid news.

New Zealand has a few new cases after 100 days of covid-free country. So they quickly threw on all the diagnostics they had and found no match between the virus strands and their known quarantine cases. Worse still: All people entering New Zealand must be quarantined for 2 weeks. So it did not come from tourists or immigrants. Then where did it come from, you ask? Well ... those affected work in a cold store. So there is a suspicion in the air that the virus can be caught from frozen imported food.

And in a temporally remarkable coincidence, China found Covid in frozen chickens from Brazil.

And speaking of notable coincidences in time: America's thinking about allowing food companies to process sick chickens.

Maybe Swedish. But more probably Floridian.
In mid-May, asked about a model that projected more than 137,000 people dying of the disease by Aug. 4 (a projection that turned out to be optimistic), Atlas dismissed the focus on “sensationalistic modulations of a hypothetical projection model.”

“The curves have been flattened,” he said.

i grazed the wapo article and i may have missed that death number

but i did see it in print here
from the article

"On Wednesday, Florida reported 213 new coronavirus deaths. That brought its overall fatality total to 8,898 and its average daily deaths over the past week to 164. That’s down from the state’s peak rate of daily deaths of 185 a week ago. The peak rate for New York — a state of comparable population — was more than 760 in mid-April.

Also Wednesday, there were more than 8,100 new infections reported in Florida, for a total of 550,000 known cases in the state since the start of the pandemic.

The number of people treated in Florida hospitals for the virus continued a three-week downward trend, standing at 6,538 by late morning Wednesday — down from highs of more than 9,500.

Woods, the Marion County sheriff, said exceptions to his mask prohibition will be made for deputies at jails, schools, courthouses, hospitals, nursing homes and when dealing with someone who is elderly or has COVID-19. In these situations, the mask should be removed when giving orders or commands to comply, the sheriff said."

i also looked at the actual deaths yesterday and there were 15  (apparently they're going through past deaths and counting those now)

Interesting reads.

Any discussion of Sweden requires an enormous amount of context.  There are suggestions that they underutilized their ICU capacity and literally "let" older Swedes die.  There is also a myth that because they never "closed", they have been immune to the financial impacts of the disease.  The Swedish economic impact is very similar to the impacts felt across Scandinavia and Northern Europe.

What's also ignored is that roughly 1/3rd of Swedes self-isolated (which helps to explain the financial bits).

All countries' management of this crisis is a combination of advice and compliance, but those are always implemented through cultural prisms.  Georgia and Michigan have treated these outbreaks very differently, but they are grouped as "The US".  Each has a population roughly equal to Sweden.   There are no right answers for everyone.

Trust is the thing Swedes have that we don't.  Trust in each other, in their leaders, and in themselves.  We doubt everyone and everything.
 I don't think that's true...

Having originated in the Bay Area, I know fog.  And then you go south and get Tule fog.

All terrible to drive in.  Glasses fog is different.  But glasses fog is also terrible for driving, too.

There we have it.

If you take the first stay at home order in the US (California - March 19), you get about 145 days.  There are 165,000 dead, which equals about 1138 per day on average, or 47.4 per hour.   That's 1.26 minutes per death (about 76 seconds).

My math is quick and dirty...but the number seems right.  That's an amazing way to think about what we've been going through for 5 months...someone dies every 80 seconds.  Hell...3 or 4 more died in the time it took me to write this.
