I'm not familliar with BubbleUpup  but it looks like it is a proxy  for media servers.   Don't see how that can fit into the mix.   
Unless it can work like a screen sharing app and can cast the audio out.   ( not ideal as things are usually recompressed,  and the Android device needs to stay 'running'  )

Normally you would just use your phone/tablet  to cast to the  to the Onkyo.   Once it starts playing,  you should be able to  skip  using the android or  stereo remote.

Looking at reviews on Amazon that model supports chromecast but some people seem to have issues.   
The usual rebooting everything including router can help if they have trouble  connecting.

My intention was never to find a way to circumvent the RP app in any way but to intercept the output to send to a different render-er. I will have a search around, there maybe an app that already exists to intercept the sound going to the phones speaker.

I have BubbleuPnp installed on my phone. That is meant to handle and provide all of the Chromecast functionality. So if you can show me how to get the beta app I might be able to test this out.

Was just a suggestion as it's  likely the only option that would  let you skip from the Onkyo remote.
Might be something on the Apple side,  but I'm not sure.

Other options would be using audio out on a cheap tablet. 
Android lets you connect your own dac so there are some pretty cool options that way.    

Bluetooth is pretty good now  too if both devices support aptx

Regarding dlna,  currently the cached data is encrypted to prevent that type of random access.
   ( might be something that can be supported depending on the capabilites of the dlna solutions available.    Not something that would be available anytime soon though.   )

There's also smart speakers with audio out that can take voice commands for skip...  but  I definitely wouldn't consider that privacy friendly.

I have looked more into this Chromecast thingy and I don't like it one bit. I will not give out my location to Google Home and I have read various reports on the security or should I say lack of security the app does to my WifFi network.

So I will not be going down that route. What's wrong with DLNA anyway?

Can do that from the radio paradise page in the play store.   Option is near the bottom,   usually takes around an hour for the update to be available.

I am not talking about just using the url to stream, Onkyo can do that perfectly fine. What I am talking about is the RP Android App can buffer hours of stream. It's that buffered stream I would like to control, ie. skipping forward and back while playing out through my Onkyo.
