A classic. The dialogue in that last bit is kind of funny that the woman doesn't know the area - Endicott, NY (where she says she's from) is really close to Binghamton (which is the biggest city in that area), but maybe people didn't travel to neighboring cities as much back then unless they really had to. Yeah, most of their gags probably were good-natured and creative - especially compared to the stuff made in the last ten or fifteen years; I guess I remember ones where they just made people wait in long lines or were close to getting the victims really angry.

David Letterman used to pretend to be an average Joe on the street while playing tricks on people but eventually he got too famous for that. Then he'd work with Rupert from Rupert G's Deli—Rupert would play the average guy while Letterman would radio instructions to Rupert's earpiece.
It was fun for a while but the gag had to stop. The marks would often wind up on the verge of punching Rupert out.
I think most of them were pretty good natured and some of them were very creative as well. You caused me to look for and find one of favorites. When the show aired originally they said in the introduction that a fan had sent a letter with a rough sketch and said if you give me the money I'll build it for you and they just couldn't pass it up. There were several more victims on the original show too. If you have something like that you're going to use it. It's just too much fun
Back in the days when you could pull into a gas station, say "Fill 'er up and check the oil", and then run off into the restroom they put a 60 gallon gas tank into a little compact car and installed a 12 foot dipstick in another, but I didn't find those right away.

A lot of the Candid Camera gags seemed kind of cruel in hindsight, but this one is pretty funny and innocent - especially the first bit.
