Benefit of central planning?  I dont know.

The Washington Post has a fascinating story about how in China research is being done that could result in an enormous technological leap ahead of the United States.

The research means that “hacking-resistant communications networks” are being built across China, sensors are being designed “to see through smog and around corners,” and prototypes are being build of “computers that may someday smash the computational power of any existing machine.

“All the gear is based on quantum technology — an emerging field that could transform information processing and confer big economic and national-security advantages to countries that dominate it. To the dismay of some scientists and officials in the United States, China’s formidable investment is helping it catch up with Western research in the field and, in a few areas, pull ahead … Beijing is pouring billions into research and development and is offering Chinese scientists big perks to return home from Western labs. China’s drive has sparked calls for more R&D funding in the United States.”

The story defines quantum technology as seeking “to harness the distinct properties of atoms, photons and electrons to build more powerful tools for processing information.”

The Post writes that “last year, China had nearly twice as many patent filings as the United States for quantum technology overall, a category that includes communications and cryptology devices, according to market research firm Patinformatics. The United States, though, leads the world in patents relating to the most prized segment of the field — quantum computers — thanks to heavy investment by IBM, Google, Microsoft and others.”

In a recent report from the Center for a New American Security, it was said that “the United States must be prepared for a future in which its traditional technological predominance faces new, perhaps unprecedented challenges.”

It is an Eye Opening piece (and you can read the story in its entirety here). Quantum technology is way, way, way above my pay grade, but it seems to me that this story has a lot of implications that have nothing to do with technology.

welcome to the digital panopticon...

Leave no dark corner

China is building a digital dictatorship to exert control over its 1.4 billion citizens. For some, “social credit” will bring privileges — for others, punishment.

What may sound like a dystopian vision of the future is already happening in China. And it’s making and breaking lives.

The Communist Party calls it “social credit” and says it will be fully operational by 2020.

Within years, an official Party outline claims, it will “allow the trustworthy to roam freely under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step”.

Terracotta theft: Chinese anger over stolen warrior thumb
According to court documents, Mr Rohana, 24, was attending an Ugly Sweater Party at the Franklin Institute on 21 December when he made his way into the Terracotta Warriors exhibit, which was then closed. Mr Rohana allegedly used a mobile phone as a torch and took a selfie with one of the warriors, according to Chinese state media Xinhua, quoting the FBI. He then allegedly put his hand on the left hand of the statue and appeared to break something off from it. He pocketed the item and left.

Worse, Huawei is a huge manufacturer that makes tons of simpler devices, wireless or Bluetooth enabled, that could easily be used to collect information (read: spy) on anyone, anywhere. All those cool smart-home gadgets, where do you think they come from? I doubt the Chinese government cares what kind of mayonnaise I prefer, but it's no stretch to think they could collect sensitive, even classified, information.

There was a question?

A most peculiar/particular meaning to be sure. I guess that would also mean that when Americans attend international sport events some of them chant for their government, while the athletes compete with their government on their outfits.

Not particularly tolerant or open-minded. More a reflexive "my way or the highway" or "either with us or against us". A very dangerous streak of totalitarianism hiding behind a guise of liberty.

Ni dieu ni maître

No gods, no masters is an anarchist and labour slogan. Its English origin comes from a pamphlet handed out by the Industrial Workers of the World during the 1912 Lawrence Textile Strike. The phrase is derived from the French slogan "Ni dieu ni maître!" (literally 'Neither God nor master') coined by the socialist Louis Auguste Blanqui in 1880, when he published a journal by that name.

I trust you as much you trust me, maybe even less.  You can deny what you are all you want.  I don't deny what I am.  You do.  Its a shame you can't freely admit what you are.  I have no idea why not.  Shouldn't one be proud of their beliefs or at least honest about them ?  I am transparent, you are the direct opposite.

I noticed your new tag and googled it.  How you can insist on denying the obvious is beyond me.  Is their something wrong about it ?  How can one brag and deny what they are bragging about at the same time ?

So which is it? Anarchist, socialist, labour, French, English, or perhaps none, or maybe all?

Obviously, though probably not to you, China's ideology certainly can't be all of those at the same time, in addition to being capitalist (private ownership of production) to some degree.

You sound very confused, and all because of a tag line.
