You’d be forgiven for thinking the world is all doom and gloom – and getting worse. But these seven charts show that’s not actually the case.

The late Swedish academic Hans Rosling has identified a worrying trend: not only do many people across advanced economies have no idea that the world is becoming a much better place, but they actually even think the opposite. This is no wonder, when the news focuses on reporting catastrophes, terrorist attacks, wars and famines.

Who wants to hear about the fact that every day some 200,000 people around the world are lifted above the $2-a-day poverty line? Or that more than 300,000 people a day get access to electricity and clean water for the first time every day? These stories of people in low-income countries simply doesn’t make for exciting news coverage. But, as Rosling pointed out in his book Factfulness, it’s important to put all the bad news in perspective.

While it is true that globalisation has put some downward pressure on middle-class wages in advanced economies in recent decades, it has also helped lift hundreds of millions of people above the global poverty line – a development that has mostly occurred in South-East Asia.

for me it was hard not to like rosling and his work

factfulness is a very good book (and not because gates says so)

part of my job is managing risk

in my past life, i could channel pessimism with the best of them

i could kill any buzz, wipe any smile and make an entire room of adults weep like frightened children

well maybe not that last part, but people were staring out the window looking for the sweet meteor of death (see you in 2020!)

seriously, bigger and better data cured that

progress is in never in a straight line and there are still some tremendous challenges

and undoubtedly some politicians will try to capitalize on that fear (it is an easy sell)

but the long term trends are there (if we care to look)

regards

Don't worry about the doom and gloom
. Worry about the elephant in the room (if you have to worry at all).

Well if there is an elephant in the room, make sure its facing a window.

Indeed.

For a long time whenever I hear anyone discussing "economic growth" as an utter necessity I get nauseous.
