That was really bad timing on my part.  Still looking at a stack of unopened envelopes, to remind me of my obligation.  Hope to get there some time this year.

Island Time

Gotta say, I don't like reggae. (That's it. No "I love it!" finish) So to make it all the way through, paying attention, was something I just did out of love.

A few tunes I really liked: Middle of the Ocean, Doin' Time (really liked!), My Baby, and Edge of the Ocean all have a variation of "nice" next to my notes. Started by not liking Whiskey & Weed and noticed I was grooving to it, so there you go.
A few I didn't rate highly were Stars, Loosen Up, Down Down Down.
I like to say that I'll listen to anything, and my Sinatra is next to my Sex Pistols (It's not, really. Jane Siberry is in between), but this was a pleasant trip through a type of music I don't go through much. So I was really appreciative of the difference!

Finally got the CD player back up and running. Had to buy and re-format a new HD. (Tough call: for $129 at Costco either a SSD 2T or a regular new Seagate spinning one 8T. I chose the latter so now have three 8T with all my stuff and lots of redundancy. Many years ago we were robbed and they took 2 of the 4 visible HDs - the ones with my music. And they left behind the two with all my digitized photos and movies of the kids growing up. Back everything up, folks)

Anyway. Spinning the latter half of the CD now.

The inspiration for this disc came from the teetering pile of CDs on the little table next to the rocking chair where I keep my laptop, and the teetering pile came from...

Some live shows
Some internet shopping
A garage sale
A radio gig

The latter requires some explanation.

Every year I help out at the local college radio station fundraiser. For various donation levels you get t-shirts and hats and totebags and such, but they also put together incentive packages. Area businesses go all out to donate these things, from restaurant meals to whitewater rafting trips to (not kidding) a load of gravel.

The station itself puts together music packages as well, and since I'm in the booth I get first pick. I help out on an Americana/bluegrass show so the packages we push are mostly acoustic string band music, but lately I've been challenging myself. I picked genres I don't normally listen to (hiphop, ambient, poetry, techno) for my CD choices in an attempt to expand my tastes.

So I built up quite a pile of CDs I hadn't yet listened to and decided to go thru them with an eye toward picking a song from each for a mix disc. I didn't quite succeed; some discs just didn't have anything I could use, so I kept it to a single disc's worth. Cosy Sheridan got two cuts because they came from different discs and I really liked both and it's my disc so neener neener.

Since I was challenging my tastes I expect some of this will challenge yours. Hopefully that doesn't ruin it for you; if I didn't want to hear anything new I'd just listen to my own collection and never acquire another note, but that would be boring, wouldn't it? Can't have that.

forgive me for the late review

Trio mandilli - nice harmonies, I can see people moving and grooving to this

Anauzhka – reminds me of sade in a good way

Cosy Sheridan – great slice of americana one of my favs

Bassnectar – appealing soundtrackishness

Collapsing stars – nice build on this one

Buddy system – toe tapper for sure

Dj Vadim – sultry sexy sound

Huun-huur-tu – something about the rustic, earthy sound speaks to me def a fav

Kate tempest – likeable deaf poetry vibe

Neil – a fan, however couldn’t recall this tune

Rikki lee – always liked Rikki, had a crush on her too

Steven thoams schlagel – nice, picking up johnny on this one

Theesatisfaction – catchy throwback sound

Cosy and Charlie – really nice ballad

always pleasantly surprised by the variety of music that the clubs puts out
kudos on really mixing it up
great stuff and practically all new to me
thanks

  14. Top of the World – Slightly Stoopid
  15. Orange Sky – The Movement
  16. Rude Girl – Tribal Seeds
  17. Middle of the Ocean – Kbong
  18. Sacred Love – Big Mountain
  19. The Gold – John Brown’s Body
  20. Doin’ Time – Sublime

This was like a cooler full of Red Stripe on a hot, sunny beach. Not like I've spent a lot of time on hot, sunny beaches lately, so this was a great chill-out session in a crazy busy cold wet spring.

Highlights for me:

Losing My Mind – Iration Nice fizz when the cap comes off! Kinda set the mood fr the whole disc.
Oxygen – Dirty Heads Nice bounce to this one. Good for dancing in the beach chair.
Edge of the Ocean – Stick Figure  Wait, when did the Beach Boys play reggae? Getting a proper buzz on here.
Irie State – Fortunate Youth  A whiff of ganja on the breeze. More beach chair dancing.
Whiskey and Weed – Kashdout  I feel an urge to pass the dutchie on the lef' hand side.
Top of the World – Slightly Stoopid  A quick google says 2012, but I hear 1996. Never heard this band before but they sound instantly familiar.
Rude Girl – Tribal Seeds This stuff is really going to my head. Good thing I have no pressing matters to deal with...
Middle of the Ocean – Kbong  Oooh, so smooth. May be my favorite out of the whole cooler.
Doin’ Time – Sublime  Damn, time to go already? Knew nothing of the band but their one big hit, glad to get a deeper introduction.

In fact, all of these bands are new to me. Thanks for the window on a warm, sunny world!

So, so sorry it took me this long to respond.
It's astounding
Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll..

Love what you did here. Even though it was kinda rap inspired Reggae.
And as Mr. Miser mentioned... almost all new artist for me. Of course, Sublime. I've also heard of Stick Figures though

Highlights for me...

   1. Losing My Mind – Iration.  Not heavy... just right to my ears.
  2. Paradise – Stick Figure.  Another quality laid back vibe. Even if it was a little rappy. Poolside music.
  4. The Prophet – Slightly Stoopid.  Yeah.  Mr. Miser nailed it.. "I liked how this one rolled along smooth and easy and finished up with some stellar picking and guitar work."
11. Edge of the Ocean – Stick Figure. This was my second favorite cut on your mix. Not rappy at all. Just good 'ol Reggae.
12.  Irie State – Fortunate Youth  This was nice.  The lyrics are cool too... "Tell me my friend, how did you lose your Vibe? Don't need to find that ganja weed to find this irie state of mind.
I got this cold beer in hand, checking out this California sunshine in this warm warm warm sand."
14.  Top of the World – Slightly Stoopid. I'm beginning to like Slightly Stoopid.
16.  Rude Girl – Tribal Seeds. Very Bob Marleyish.
17.  Middle of the Ocean – Kbong. My favorite one here. Love the harmony's and birds chirping.
20.  Doin’ Time – Sublime. Not my favorite Sublime some... but it'll do.

Great job here Mr. Sun! And thanks for your work on this one.

Finally got around to spinning this, oddly enough on a rare cold day so I was in the mood for something warm and Islandy. Never heard of any of these artists aside from Sublime so I was ready for some new grooves. Tunes that got my attention along the way:

Losing my Mind - really good bass playing here, I was impressed
The Prophet - I liked how this one rolled along smooth and easy and finished up with some stellar picking and guitar work.
Ilya Terry - Traditional Reggae beat with some choice lyrics, State Side you say?
Pepper - Reggae meets Lenny Kravitz
Irie State - Funky off-beat stirred the pot a bit.
Slightly Stoopid - 2nd song on the mix from these guys that I liked.
Middle of the Ocean - Relaxing tune, definitely gave me an Island vibe. Favorite of the group.
Sublime - I've always liked how they sample "Summertime and the Living is Easy" here. Juxtaposition at it's finest.

In the words of the Great Graham Gouldman - I don't like Reggae, I LOVE it!
Pass the Red Stripe!
