Yeah, it's commercial studio work but the singer does reproduce this live (with a lot of sampling/looping, but still it's mostly her). Another of my favorite discoveries, and whoever is producing her videos is nailing it. This is one of the few music videos that appeal to me as a legitimate art form of its own, as opposed to a tv commercial for a band.

3. This was very cool, sounds northern possibly Eastern African maybe Somalian? I really am enjoying this.

Not completely sure which country, just know they're speaking French. Snipped from a video essay of the same title—this isn't a band or anything, just some guy singing.
4. Never could roll my rs; seriously r rollin situation at first sounded like it might even be South American, then as soon as the vocals started; Arabic, Lebanese? I am in a guessing mood. Lot of r rollin
going on.

Yemeni Jewish sisters living in Israel. The song is about their parents being forced to leave Yemen as refugees. They did a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR that is really memorable. I really dig 'em, and I can't roll an R in a wheelbarrow.
7. This is almost 2 songs in one with that transition very Eastern European gypsy feel and then into a totally different tempo and with the horns almost sounded Jewish at times. Then kinda French jazz or something but over it all the chick has some great pipes. I bet she doesn't wear shoes, that is how you know you're onto something.

I think your numbering is off here—Amadeus Quartet is firmly in the western tradition. I think you mean Djelem Djelem, a Romani tune (known as the Romani national anthem) being performed by the Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer Orchestra, a combination of influences that's surprisingly harmonious. And in the video the singer is indeed barefoot, very astute observation!
Disc 2

5. White dresses and cows in a mist....again she is not wearing shoes......

Georgian trio that does their best work singing into a cell phone camera. They sometimes wear traditional Georgian costumes, sometimes western—here, see for yourself. And this shoe thing is gettin' kinda creepy...
6. I am a sucker for the pipes and since the pandemic, the pants wearing has gone way down so I am appropriately dressed to lift the pipes or at least a proper pint. Ahh the children can't go wrong with children, dogs, whistling and bells even the cow variety, wait that was the previous song. Who is this? What am I doing again?

You have got to see this video. Buckle up, it's charmingly weird. And in costume. And..weird.
8. Favorite song of this disc so far tho I probably could have done without the percussion, the pipes were doing alright on their own.

More kilts and bagpipes (this time Spanish) and a hurdy-gurdy thrown in for good measure. Kopanitsa is a Bulgarian folk dance and the musicians are doing a cross-cultural collaboration.
9. Ok this is roots; this is now my favorite so far. Didn't expect the throat singing in this one. She has a lovely voice. Bet she doesn't like shoes either.

Tatar folk music, one of my favorite discoveries on this wander. No clue on footwear, NTTAWT.
13. Ok we are back in the dirt or the back alley; somwhere in the Baltics I would imagine. Much like Gogol Bordello fronted by someone much less errr grating.

Would you believe a riverboat in Russia? Shot live. You can hear the other boats at times.
14. Ohh yea the commercial song; I thought of looking this song up too, now I don't have to so there.

16. I didn't want to like this one, but the lawyers whispered in my ear that it was ok...so yea I can ride the rainbow.

Surprised me too., but then I love surprises.
17. Another for the no pants crowd....the electric no pants crowd..a lot of things moving all the time.

A Punjabi/Irish musician who relishes the overlap between her two cultures. Really cool to see Bhangra, Scottish, and Irish step dancing to the same tune. I loves me some cultural appropriation.

All right, time to come clean.

These disks started with me looking for one last tune to finish off a different disk. I was looking for a good version of Inisheer, an Irish waltz. I found one on YouTube, but YouTube uses your searches (and search and viewing history) to suggest other things you might like. And here was a song by Julie Fowlis, a Scottish singer who performs in Scots Gaelic (and gives interviews in it as well, she's trying to revive the language).  And I found some I really liked. But YouTube wasn't done with me.

Did you know there was a bagpipe tradition in Latvia? YouTube did, and thought I might like it. It had all kinds of suggestions. I decided to see where that went.

Every time I found a tune I liked I checked the recommended videos for bands or tunes, and clicked the one least familiar. This went on pretty late that night.

The results are before you. The tunes are more-or-less in the order I found them. There were a few where the musicians were familiar but the tune (at least their version of it) wasn't. And it's my disk even if YouTube's algorithm had a lot to do with it, so I get to decide what goes on it.

The artwork for these was the lamest I've done I think, so I won't reproduce that here, just the tune lists. I've done my best to reproduce the spelling in languages I'm not familiar with. If you want to check these out where I found them they should be searchable—and some of these are well worth watching.

Disk 1
1. Julie Fowlis-  Hùg Air A' Bhonaid Mhòir
2. Talisk - Montreal
3. FOLI - There Is No Movement Without Rhythm
4. A-WA - Hana Mash Hu Al Yaman
5. Yaron Pe'er & Leat Sabbah - Winter Sun
6. Boete - Gobi
7. Amadeus Quartet - She's the One
8. Barcelona Gipsy Klezmer - Djelem Djelem
9. Cosmic Voice From Bulgaria & Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra - Zaspalo e Chelebiiche
10. Faran Ensemble - Dune
11. Yamma Ensemble - Psalms 104
12. Allison Krause - Carolina in My Mind
13. Pistol Annies - Takin' Pills
14. Chip Taylor & The New Ukrainians - Fuck All The Perfect People
15. Pokey LaFarge - Fuck Me Up

Disk 2
1.  Melbourne Ska Orchestra - Get Smart
2.  Kent - Då Som Nu För Alltid
3.  The Prodigy - Timebomb Zone
4.  Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side Of Heaven
5.  Trio Mandili - Mze shina (Sun inside)
6.  Auļi, Suitu sievas, Suitu vÄ«ri, Suitu dÅ«denieki, Ilža, Otto Trapāns, TarkšÄ·i, Vilkači - Ozoliņi
7.  Tautemeitas - Panama
8.  Efrén López, Meira Segal, Yoni Ben-Dor - Kopanitsa
9.  Cicha & Pałyga - Bahczalarda
10. Altai - Eej Minu
11. Mean Mary - Iron Horse
12. Eivør Pálsdóttir - Tròdlabùndin
13. Отава Ё - Яблочко (Otava Yo - Yablochko - Little Apple)
14. Jain - Makeba
15. ZAZ - Qué Vendrá
16. AronChupa ft. Little Sis Nora - Little Swing
17. The Snake Charmer - Drowsy Maggie
18. The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin - Mo Ghille Mear (My Gallant Hero)

This is actually the first time I have even looked at song list posting this now.{#Lol}

Remember these are all real time comments without looking at the playlist. Sometimes I make later edits after looking to see if I made the right guess or not, but these are all first impressions.

Highlights for me:

Disc 1

1.   Gaelic folk sound; I already look like someone who was in on the building of Stonehenge might as well close me eyes and raise a wooden mug to the Gods.{#Cheers}

3.  This was very cool, sounds northern possibly Eastern African maybe Somalian?  I really am enjoying this.

4.  Never could roll my rs; seriously r rollin situation at first sounded like it might even be South American, then as soon as the vocals started; Arabic, Lebanese? I am in a guessing mood.  Lot of r rollin going on.

6.  I love me some throat singing; my dog is not very fond of it, but that is probably tmi, everyone's a critic....

7.  This is almost 2 songs in one with that transition very Eastern European gypsy feel and then into a totally different tempo and with the horns almost sounded Jewish at times.  Then kinda French jazz or something but over it all the chick has some great pipes.  I bet she doesn't wear shoes, that is how you know you're onto something. {#Pray}

9.  Bulgarian Choir?  I got a lot of their stuff when I'm feeling all Nosferatu and what not.

10.   That is some serious muscianship there; got me through cropping a half o bag of green beans!

11.  This has to be Northern Africa, again I see the barefoot ladies this time belly dancing, but all styles are welcome here at the Clusterdome.{#Cool}

12.  Not as good as the original, but such a beautiful tune. Of course us South Carolinians usurp the shit out of this one.

13.  Ok this is my favorite song of the mix so far, but I'm kinda in the same frame of mind as this chick so we just like there.

15.  Sounds like Nick Waterhouse, Devendra Banhart and Pokey Lafarge.  Pokey is that you?  Yea its Pokey. Gotta be.  This is a cool song, I gotta smoke something. {#Cowboy}

Disc 2

1.  Get Smart in ska.  I can take ska in small doses.  Totally thinking of the ska dancer in the suit.

5.  White dresses and cows in a mist....again she is not wearing shoes......

8. Favorite song of this disc so far tho I probably could have done without the percussion, the pipes were doing alright on their own.

9.  Ok this is roots; this is now my favorite so far.  Didn't expect the throat singing in this one.  She has a lovely voice.  Bet she doesn't like shoes either.

10. This is the best throat singing I have heard so far.

11.  Love the band, her voice just did not get along with me brain.  Love the banjo, sometime you just got to hear a banjo.

13.  Ok we are back in the dirt or the back alley; somwhere in the Baltics I would imagine.  Much like Gogol Bordello fronted by someone much less errr grating. {#Frustrated}

14.  Ohh yea the commercial song; I thought of looking this song up too, now I don't have to so there.

15.  This lady can saang.

16. I didn't want to like this one, but the lawyers whispered in my ear that it was ok...so yea I can ride the rainbow.

17. Another for the no pants crowd....the electric no pants crowd..a lot of things moving all the time.{#Drummer}

Nice little jaunt around the globe, now wunnit?  We have learned many things, but first and foremost we have learned that life is hopefully more than a wee bit better when you are not wearing pants and shoes.{#Yell}

You better hurry.
My "Now how about something totally different" is getting close to its final production.

All right, time to come clean.
Well , I was just a little off in the "Trip Around the World" perspective.
More of a trip through You Tube's guidance.
A interesting and fresh way to do what you did. It looks like nobody else has done this before.
Yeah... it was pretty deep for simple mind such as I. You seem to come up with these very unique mixes... and I do look forward to what you come up with. Definitely music I've never heard.
Even the Alison Krauss.

Did you know there was a bagpipe tradition in Latvia? YouTube did, and thought I might like it. It had all kinds of suggestions. I decided to see where that went.

Somehow I'm friends with Batzorig Vaanchig of Mongolia and he did this thing with Auli, your Latvian bagpipe guys.

Well if that wasn't the cleverest way to come up with a mix then I don't know what else is. Now I know why I was in a strange Rabbit Hole during my listening time.  I never did look at the playlist until now, just made notes of song #s. Now I see the depth of the hole, and the worldly characters found there. Pretty impressive. Songs that made an impression on me.

Talisk - What a splendid piece of music. No wonder you got sucked in deep.

To be honest making a mix disk out of YouTube wanderings seemed like cheating, but I liked what I found so much I figured other people might too. It isn't quite random, the algorithm is trained by my past wanderings—so I guess I deserve some credit for liking surprises. Had the music suggested all been lame this never would have happened, and we'd be discussing a disk of dance music.

Talisk is a lot like the music you'd hear at the Lazy 8 most of the time, so I was surprised I hadn't heard of them.
Winter Sun was a haunting tune

This is a collaboration between an Israeli cellist and an Afghan rabab player. Peanut butter and chocolate to me.
Boete - is that electronic whistling I hear? any relation to Goete?

Throat singing from Mongolia. I doubt they've ever heard of Goete, but it might be an interesting collaboration.
Cosmic Voice harked me to what I thought was an Indian Enya, Bulgaria I never would have guessed

This is a heavily-produced studio recording but the harmonies are authentic—Bulgarian choral music has stunning harmonies.
I digged the flow from the Faran to the Yamma Ensemble

Faran plays instruments from around the middle east but they are based in Israel. Yamma uses more western instruments but are also Israel-based and play traditional music
Allison Krause? Where did she come from? Kinda out of left field.

Yeah, that surprised me too...but I love surprises. I also love Allison Krause, and I love this song, and I had never heard her version. Close enough to the theme for me.
Pistol Annies - Strange name for a Country sounding band

I have a pretty good idea where this one came from: I have a cousin deep into contemporary country music and I asked her for an introduction. Since country music mostly makes me sleepy and I wasn't about to go listen to country radio. Pistol Annies is her favorite band.
Get Smart in Ska, now that was some fun stuff.

This might be the biggest surprise for me on this journey—I don't even like Ska, why is this so much fun? Whatever. Doesn't need to make sense. I just rolled with it.
Liked the pipes on Ozolini, Latvia you say Hmmm

This song is a showcase for contemporary Latvian folk musicians, and it turns out to be a pretty rich tradition. The pipers are from the band Auli (who seems to be the driving force behind this effort) but it may have most of the Latvian folk music scene in it.

The video is a near-perfect balance between eastern European kitsch and sincerity. Ozolini means oak tree, which is apparently a symbol of strength in Latvian culture; the musicians wear garlands of oak leaves and the whole thing was shot in a forest. Probably all very meaningful, but I liked how it sounded.
Tautemietas had a really nice voice, just don't know what she's singing about

A vocal group, actually. More Latvians, and I think some of them sang on the last number as well. They've done some collaborations with Auli for Latvian TV which I like a lot. Hey, when I fall down a rabbit hole I go all the way down.
Altai - who know Popeye was bi-lingual?

Another central Asian throat singing group.
Dug the banjo picking on Iron Horse

Mean Mary is a demon picker! Kind of a showoff. This is one of her more-restrained numbers.
I was thinking Eivor was one of those songs recorded Live in the Lazy Living room.

Live outdoor concert in Iceland. Starts out with just voice and hand drum. And if somebody shows up with those kind of vocal chops I've got a Yup'ik hand drum handy.
ZAZ - man I love French Chicks

This one came to my (and thus YouTube's) attention from a friend, former world music DJ at the local college radio station, so I'd heard her before. She's singing in a mixture of French and Spanish here.
You deserve Kudo's for this one in spades. While I can't say I liked a lot of it, it certainly opened my eyes to the depth of music out there for our collective enjoyment.

Going by the song comments on anything that isn't in English on RP I expected this would push some buttons, but the one I like best is marked "Play". And did I mention I love surprises?
