Apologies for the late review. I always get to your mixes quick, but work and life have been complicated lately.
I have to admit I wasn't crazy about the theme once I figured it out, but I was pretty crazy for the tunes. You never disappoint! Even the bands I was familiar with had new stuff for me. I think I was only able to recognize a half dozen of these, and the new stuff was pretty terrific. BTW I think I counted four previous mix disks with Country Death Song on them—one of them one of mine—so it seems that one has caught a lot of imaginations.
Carolina Chocolate Drops, Tom Waits, Busta Rhymes, Andrew Bird, and DBTs were all standouts but nothing here made me skip a song. Listened a couple times and I'll listen a few more.
Someday I'd like to browse your music collection, because...damn!

Ok, I actually held tightly to a theme instead of being so obtuse this time. This theme is so obvious no explanation necessary:

Took me awhile to get thru these twice which I like to do before reviewing. Great theme, very clever. And who says Latin is a dying language? Highlights Vida 1st track grabbed me right from the get go, a fan of the New Pornographers You can put Matthew Sweet on any mix and it will always be a highlight Gentle Giant - Quirky tune, but that's progressive rock right there Love the haunting Tom Waits song, trying to recall if anyone has used his material on a mix before. Seems we could use more of him. AC/DC - Turn up the volume!
y Muerte The Last Days of Jimi Hendrix - GENIUS! thought this was the Fruit Bats at first Old Cat Died - nice Appalachian song Not a big Beck fan but this song was engaging Nothing like Townes Van Zandt to bring down the mood, one depressing tune Junior Brown - hit the funny bone, and some great picking Death is not the end - Great Duo! or Trio...wait its a Five-O (wonder what the latin term is for that?) I ain't got no message for the YOUTH of America - always loved that line
Great job stepping in on short notice, you outdid yourself. This will be in heavy rotation for me for awhile.
Frodo's got a good playlist going for him. Most all of this was familiar to this hobbit. Oddly enough the 2 tracks that I didn't know where the bookends, first track and last. They turned out to be my favorites. I've never been a big Genesis guy, but do like the Gabriel Era stuff. This one was very pleasing to the ear. And I guess I haven't listened to Fly by Night in a decade or so as I'd completely forgotten that track. Of course the mighty Zep is heard in many a hobbit hole.

Mix is done. Will mail out Tuesday. I know y'all don't like it when songlist aren't included with Cds, but I really don't feel like messing with a printer and cutting this time. Will post song list about a week after eta to reach you guys which will give you enough time to have listened at least once. Or if everyone checks in when they have listened, I will post it right after that. Promise will not leave you hanging more than a couple of days or so.

Belated September "Mixtape" CDs were shipped via USPS yesterday afternoon. You will immediately guess the theme. It's been an idea I've had for a while and had actually started a Forum here in RP 12 Years ago about the subject. What if this character had an iPod and what songs might he/she include on it?
2. Ubiqitous? Quite, but it is a well constructed song. Sound quality on this track is outstanding.
3. My wife sent me this video when Nimoy died.....even for the 60s that shit was weird yo.
4. One of the great Page riffs and this is one of Plant's best vocal performances. And baby, baby, baby do you like it?
5. At first I was like is this the Munsters or something, then I went straight to Cambodia cause that's where you find stuff like this and then I forgot where I was and settled into the madness. Kinda like it.
6. This was one of my favorite songs of my teenage years. Bass line is off the chisy as the kids say oh and Brian, that'l do now won't it? I can't believe so many didn't know Freddie was gay, great name Freddie quite possibly the best name ever. Yes, I do believe it is.
8. You had me at Chris Thile.
9. I love this song of course cause its the Beatles and there are very few post 65 Beatles songs I don't love, I don't really listen to them very often cause I have already listened to them enough for a couple of lifetimes in the 90s and this particular one even less so it is not as redundant as one would think. Shout out to George...Martin that is or is it over produced by Spectre?
12. Two Zep songs, did I dress properly? Another Plant masterpiece. I know people that don't like him, I tell them to listen to his post zep catalog and then go back and listen to Zep again and get back to me. Love the little tick, sounds like was added later. This was reproduced, right?
14. What an inspiration to want to frame this with Mariachi horns, seems to have come out of the blue. Such a unique song.
15. The whole intro I was like I have heard this and many times and I can't place it, then the Jeff Lynne chords and my comfort food is served.
All in all even though I am not a Tolkin reader or even movie buff and don't know a lot on the subject enjoyed the mix very much.
Sorry, I'm asleep at the wheel. I don't think we have a lineup set for the next round. Anybody think they can scrounge up something for November? In the past we have forgone December due to holiday business. We could just start up a new line up in January if nobody wants to do a November mix. Thoughts?
Been running behind on empty or something lately meself. I can get my act together and do this though. Always ready to take one from the errr for the team.
We can always count on you in a pinch. No pressure, take your time.

Liked this a bunch, starting with the most excellent cover art.
Some familiar music but you'd think (having raised an actual professional Tolkien scholar) I'd have heard all of this. A few great surprises, Especially the Neil Finn and Steve Hackett. And I always loved that ELO number, just never thought of it in this context.
Well done, will be sharing this with my offspring!

Disc made the 15 mile journey safe and sound. Looking forward to some Hobbit sounds.
