War seemed a very likely possibility given that “the business men of one nation are pitted against those of another and swing the forces of the state, legislative, diplomatic, and military, against one another in the strategic game of pecuniary advantage.” This was written well before the outbreak of World War I.

An overrated book really, like with most moral panics. I do think that Sons and Lovers justifies all the fuss made over D.H. Lawrence, but if you really like to see Englishmen having sex above their station, read The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley. ("The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.")  Made into a good movie too, but of course not as good as the book.

If you are exposed to a potential lightening strike, take off all metal items including clothing with zippers.  Metal conducts electricity into the body, but if there is none, the electricity will tend to travel over the skin.

An African soldier who comes to Europe, has shot or bayoneted white men, and who has had sexual relations with white women, might loose his belief in the superiority of the whites.

I did college and grad school in southern Louisiana, and man you should’ve had some of them biscuits back then after a Dixie-beer-fueled evening of dancing to The Cold. Good times.

Yes, that’s Ellen’s brother Vance on bass.

If you put tomatoes in any beans before they're fully cooked, they'll stop the beans from softening further.

Aha! I did not know that. Explains a batch of black-eyed peas that never softened up.
The google says that's correct: acidity will keep the beans from softening. Not an old wives' tale!
