I learned the "duffel" spelling as well, though I do see the "le" spelling pretty often.  I didn't know it was named for a place; I assumed it was someone's last name, like "leotard", or maybe just a French term for "satchel" or something.

Duffel is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp...The town gives its name to a heavy woollen cloth used to make overcoats, especially for the armed forces, and various kinds of luggage. Items made from this material are sometimes spelled duffle as in duffle coat and duffle bag.
