There are some really cool ways they try to measure all this stuff, like eddy covariance towers. Basically they stick a tower in the middle of an area with more or less uniform vegetation and on that tower there is a sensor that measure wind speed in three dimensions at a really high frequency along with other sensors like something to measure the humidity. Then, through the magic of software, they determine how much moisture is moving up, down, and sideways and can calculate the evapotranspiration in all directions across the area. At one point I thought about trying to figure out how to analyse the data but kind of got caught between the people who said that the devil is in the details so you have to know your shit, and the instrument manufacturers who said their software was all turn key. But my bosses wouldn't infest in the equipment, even though they seemed happy to waste money on all sorts of useless shit, so I just dropped it.
That's the total water that comes out of the cornfield, including evaporation from the soil and dew on the leaves, plus transpiration, water vapor exiting directly from the pores of the plant.
If it hasn't rained in days but you walk across grass in the hot sun and feel the humidity change, that's transpiration only.

That's why I tend to stay away from the political forums.
All those discussions of one side trying to persuade the other side to their side... really don't go anywhere.
They just cause a lot of grief.
I've found when we see someone in person... one can have a civil discussions without all the hate coming from a keyboard.

Transpiration. There's a word for it, and it's transpiration.
Seems like sensationalist headlines. I mean, if the area was originally forested, trees typically transpire more than plants with shallower roots. And even grasses transpire, except for the ones that are annuals that die off in summer or ones that go dormant in the heat.
