I abhor LOUD.   Guess it is all about tastes.  Weird, I am the first guy to complain when the band is too loud.

Yeah, I've been to a lot of concerts lately where it's just impossible to enjoy them because of the booming distorted loudness. I figure there was a sound check and it would have been even boomier then since the venue would be unoccupied. But, damn, once you're in the middle of that unlistenable thumping how the hell do you get it to lessen? A few years ago I went to see Dylan and Kings of Leon were so loud we couldn't hear ourselves talk - outside past the doors near the concessions.

This
is what it makes me think of :-)
Sometimes I take ear plugs just to be on the safe side, I agree that it can be painfully loud, irrespective of the music itself, and some damage to hearing is irreversible, not good.

To add to my original story, the problem might have been that the treble was turned up too high as the last use of the sound board was for a play.  We did not get an opportunity to sound check the entire band playing together at full volume.  Once rectified the complaints stopped.

But yes, too many acts or venues are too loud and in general we are not careful enough with our hearing.  Back in the mid-70s in various blue collar jobs with high noise levels, I was the only worker consistently wearing ear protection.

Here is a cute story about a very young scientist:   Some kids say hand dryers hurt their ears. A Canadian girl conducted a study about it   According to NPR, she started this study at the age of 9!  Now that makes me laugh in a very, very good way!

Thanks for this, that was entertaining and instructive. It's funny how PPE is sometimes looked down on by workers. Then again, they're not always given the choice of which PPE they'd like to wear. A colleague of mine did a study and showed that in some cases, workers not wearing PPE were better protected than those who were wearing them improperly. It was chemical protective suits and gloves. The PPE-less workers were more careful and those who wore them had not been trained properly on donning / doffing them.

I just hope that by the time this young scientist gets older, there will still be occupational health and safety laws and standards!

Thanks for sharing.
