Andrea passed yesterday, while I was holding her hand and reading to
her from one of our favorite childhood books, “Mary Poppins”, as she had
requested. The hospice doctor told me that she had only seen one other
person be as lucid to so near the end as Andrea was – though, in my
family, we are 3 for 3 in that now. (Both our parents were the same.)
She wondered aloud to L & me if there was such a thing as an “end of life massage”
and so we made that happen. (Stay tuned for our trip to New Zealand, as Andrea requested,
which we will also make happen)
The lady who came was a help to us all. Early in the day, Andrea, had
been fretting to me that she was “putting too much onto L and J” –
typically thinking of others rather than herself. Later in the day, a
harp player came to play. Andrea enjoyed it, but when I started to sing
along with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” she hit me in the face with her
spiral pillow. Several students spontaneously showed up as they were
"too upset" to stay away; one had dreamt about her the night before. An
old college friend drove 100 miles just to recite 3 short poems to her.
And she got to see, we think, the mock-up of the cover of her
soon-to-be-published novel, High Tide.
One of the last things she said was, “I know I’m going soon, and it’s okay.”
Personally, I will miss her entirely too much as long as I live.
But, as our father would often say, while raising a hand as if he were leading a
charge in the Boer War, "Forward!"

The celebration of her life, with music & poetry, will be at 10:30  on June 22nd.
All friends (of which we have discovered there are so very many) are
welcome. She asked people to bring a photo of her in happy times and
there will also be a time for anyone who wants to say something short
and sweet about her. ("Short and sweet?" said her long-time friend, Adam.
"So, a self-portrait, then?")

My best friend from high school (not to be confused with my Former Best Friend) is dying. Cancer. She's a brilliant woman. Funny. Talented. Generous. A teacher in the truest sense. She and I had a falling out, and for years were out of contact. The beauty that can be Facebook put us back in touch. I'm so grateful. Her younger sister is with her, and she is in hospice now. I worry about the sister, as they have lost in rapid succession their beloved father and then their equally beloved mother. This has got to be hell for her, to now watch her older sister fade away. Please keep A and J in your thoughts. And A's son, L too.

Tomorrow I check in to the hospital at 9am for an angiogram/plasty. From what I've read online it's a pretty simple procedure. Still it kind of freaks me out a little to think they are going to run a cath from my leg up thru my arteries to my heart to look for defects and or blockages. If any issues are found they can fix it right then and there. I've had uncontrolled high blood pressure for many years now. Hopefully this will fix it.
Also, thank you all for your messages and condolences on my brother's passing last week.
