So I'd like to request a focus of this love and many healing thoughts on my friend (a wonderful husband and father and artist) who's battling cancer.

Some of his tumors are shrinking...here's to a complete remission!
Maybe he can be one of the many who kicks that horrible disease's ass.

It's hard to tell and I don't know all the details of course, but it looks as if the VA facility is not a tertiary-care hospital, but refers patients needing NICU services to the University hospital. So the family should look into that and familiarize themselves with both hospitals. If one of the kids needs surgery, they'll be moved to the tertiary care hospital, separated from the others and the mother. If the doc anticipates that this might be necessary, they can have the mom moved to that hospital ahead of delivery. But you have to ask the questions or they'll probably just hope for the best where they are.

Thanks for the helpful input, Scott. I'm sure that VA staff gives the best care possible, but in this case the VA is only paying the bill for Michele's lengthy stay at a private hospital. So she's right where she needs to be for neonatal care.

I have mixed feelings about that. I'm grateful that a loved one is well cared for. And I certainly think that she's entitled to it after serving her country, even if it was all during peacetime. I'm just having trouble reconciling the VA's performance as an insurance company with their reported performance as a primary care provider. I believe that those who were injured in combat should have at least the same access to health care that those who finished their tours without incident enjoy. But that's for another topic.

I had forgotten, but you reminded me that my old office was located near the NICU. It brought back memories of when I was new on the job, and having a high-spirited conversation with a colleague, who led me to the NICU's "secret exit" in the on the way back to the office. That back door was in a darkened area that I had assumed was that way because it was unused. I was startled to discover that suddenly we were among all of these very sick little babies. After that experience, I always passed through the NICU with reverence.

For all of us and ours who are sick or suffering otherwise:

Dear All:

Great forum idea!!! I will pray for all the intentions in here. Please also add my Nephew's son. He is 15 and has cancer in his leg. Due (IMHO) the power of prayer and a VERY positive attitude, he has not lost his leg and is almost turning the corner on this thing!

Thank you">
