Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS Lens for Canon Digital EOS

As far as I can tell, this is decent all around lens at a very fair price.

I'll know very soon.

You may have some problems shooting action with that lens. The autofocus really has to be fast and accurate or you become very frustrated. Nothing worse than shooting a series of pics and thinking you captured great action and it turns out that the pics are soft.

One multipurpose lens is the Holy Grail. Are you a believer? Just like anything else that is "multipurpose", it does a lot of things, but doesn't do anything exceptionally well.

B+H rocks.

dont forget to post the bikini pics

I know that I'll have to sacrifice in areas with say an 18-200 SIGMA, however as I get better(more experienced) I'm sure I'll step up and get some specific purpose gear/glass.

I was also looking at the Sigma 18-200 and the Canon 18-200

I would like image stabilization.

Probably shoot some action, landscapes, family stuff, animals in the everglades, bikinis at the beach {#Angel}

I like the idea of one multipurpose lens (I'm usually on a bike with small back pack)

As far as can tell B&H has everything I need and a good rep, so the purchase will be done there.

thx

Skip the test results and go right to the conclusion. Think about the type of photographs you will be using this for. If you will be shooting any kind of action, this may not be the best choice. If you are shooting travel pics and family stuff, this may work very well for you. Also, what do want for a finished product? Will just be posting to a Flickr account or will you be making prints? If the finished pics will be living on a computer, the lens is probably fine. If you are making large prints (8x10 or 11x14), you may see some problems. Buy it from a place with a good return policy and then when you get it, test it. Shot with it and then look very closely at the results. Even if you don't plan on having a lot of prints made, you may want to send out some test pics just to make sure they will be acceptable.

Reviews are great, but, in the end, it's what you think that matters. Have fun.

  • FX (Full Frame) Coverage

  • Both the Nikon and Canon mount versions of this lens will mount on full-frame DSLRs; on Nikon cameras (D3, D3X, D700) DX crop mode will be automatically selected (and the camera will therefore shoot at reduced resolution). The lens's image circle doesn't cover the 35mm full frame format properly at any focal length, giving severe vignetting; this is very obvious and well-defined at 18mm, but gets increasing diffuse at longer focal lengths. This is illustrated in the samples below.
  • 18mm 50mm 100mm 270mm
  • The bottom line is that if you shoot using a full frame camera, a lens with appropriate coverage really does make far more sense.

For super wide, stitching is probably your best option. There is a small handful of new point and shoot cameras that shoot at 24-28mm equivalent at the wide end, but these little gems are pretty expensive. The wide angle adapter needs to be of good quality or it will degrade the image, and it's more complicated than stitching, in my opinion.

Stitch-assist - right. My camera has that. But I'm going to get a new one soon—just a small easy-peasy digital point and shoot—-and I was wondering with today's technology if I could flip a button and it would take a wider angle of my view.

One of the other hikers yesterday had photos that encompassed the entire waterfall and surrounding cliffs (taken with his REAL wide angle lens and expensive camera), and I want to be able to widen my view. But I don't want to haul a big camera lens around. Or a big camera.

Are there any cheaper, smaller, point-and-shoot type cameras that actually have a wide angle lens function? Or do you have to have a bona fide lens that attaches to the camera for that effect?

How wide?

Wide angle on 35mm film format started at 28mm. (or thereabouts) My LX3 is a 24mm equivalent at the wide end. Pretty bright too. Great for parties, museums, etc.

Edit: I have also checked ze Google....it would appear that this is NOT a common problem specific to this model.
