One thing you might try  is having him sit down during a good RP set and jam along. Plus he'll come across a lot of non standard rhythms.

      I do that sometimes when I'm shaking off rust and the jumping around from style to style really gets you up to speed quick.

There are a lot of affordable drum/rhythm machines around (there are also some very expensive ones).  Most of them will have a "metronome" setting as well as numerous drumbeats with variable tempos.  Friends of mine who give music lessons have used them with students to teach not only "time", but also to teach syncopation and other rhythm fundamentals.

{#Arrowu}  My suggestion too!  (coming from a music teacher).  You can also get guitar books that have play along CDs with them, and those are good to use to help with timing, too!

I might also suggest some lessons.  Nothing beats one on one teaching for such things.

Anyone used Elixir strings? I paid $14 for a set of lights which I'm hoping to get more than the usual 2 or 3 crazy sessions from.

 If I get hot and sweaty, I wipe my strings down with a microfiber rag (actually usually a coffee filter, dirt cheap and low fiber)and rubbing alcohol. I'm wondering of this destroys the coating on these strings.

 Anyone got a clue? I can Google, I'm hoping for some personal experience based advice here, since it is a music site after all.

 At least in non election years.{#Roflol}

Anyway, this{#Arrowd}, from there website sounds good, but that's the guys selling the product talking.

"Elixir® Strings coats the entire string with a micro-thin barrier against corrosion and contamination. Nothing, including the coating itself, can invade the space between the windings. And that's the secret to long-lasting tone."

I have only played one set of Elixers.  That coating transfers to your fingertips.  It drove me nuts.  The strings were still good and I swapped `em out anyway.  Mostly because of the sensation that someone's snot was on my hands!  Also, don't recall the tone and amplitude of the strings being to my liking.

Your results may vary.

(edit)  Oh, I have no idea what alcohol will do to the coating.

I'm not a guitarist worthy of THIS series of events, nor do I live in Pennsylvania or Ohio, but if YOU are, then this would be worth your while...
This guy Kenny Sultan is pretty freakin' amazing:

I thought I would drop you a note about some upcoming Martin Clinics(always free), and the Fur Peace Ranch teaching camp.
If any one would like some more info, feel free to contact me at kennysultan@aol.com
Hopefully see you around!,

I was in a class where Alex de Grassi talked about open tuning and how he moved the chords to get different feelings.  He's sitting there, guitar tuned to something like GADEAD, just doodling while he talks, pretty nice sound.  He plays a finger-busting C chord up around the 12th fret and says, "I think I need a fuller sound here."  Without a blink he switched down to around the 5th fret, fingers octopusing around.  Scary to see how fast his brain worked at reworking the chord.

At this point I realized the class was so far over my head that I'd never see the sky, and I spent the rest of the time tucked away in a corner, awed, listening to de Grassi and the other students. I have an autographed cassette, where he writes "I hope to hear you play some day."  Um, no.  Not in this life time. {#Lol}
