Yes, for his style of music it's fine, because he never really had to put up a show.

It depends very much on the style of music and the way it needs to be performed. James Brown, sitting in a chair, wouldn't have been appreciated, but seeing (hearing) him perform the last years of his life, mainly made me nostalgic about how it used to be. On the other hand, decline does have its charm (sometimes).

I saw B.B. King a few years ago, right around his 80th birthday.  He sat down in a chair for nearly the entire show, bantered with the audience like the charming old man that he is, and politely rocked everyone's freaking faces off.  He's 85 now, and I'd go see him again in a heartbeat.

I can resolve all the arguments bandied about in this thread, with just a few examples:

- Pinetop Perkins (retired) - DEAD
- Johnny Cash (retired) - DEAD
- B.B. King
- Dave Brubeck
edit:
- Pete Seeger - should retire....

That is all.

I think artists should have the right to perform and record as long as they are able and people are willing to purchase product. Now whether they should retire is up to personal opinion and there is no right or wrong answer. Personally I think there are a lot of artists that should retire not because I want to take away their right to create as they wish, but because they are ruining their legacy and sometimes it just gets to be plain ol' tacky. Kinda like wearing white in winter or something.{#Daisy}

Leon Russell actually had brain surgery to stop leaking fluid, but he has other health problems also.

To be clear, I don't think that artists should just retire at a certain age, that was just the name of this old thread I picked up. I just think that PS's new stuff is crap, that is all I was saying.

Or at least not his most recent album. If everyone stopped after a stumble, there'd be a lot of short careers and a lot of missed masterpieces. You probably would have had a better reaction from others if you'd just started with "I don't like Paul Simon's recent work" instead of "artists should retire after a certain age".

I actually didn't start this thread, I did a search and picked up an old thread that had this title.

Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that he has some sort of spinal problems or something.  I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
