The really funny part is that we had a designer do a poster for our NH Creative Club, and we actually agreed to tell her she had to make the logo bigger.

That song goes around our office occasionally. Painfully accurate.

SIR YES SIR!

Student Graphic Designer (Oakland)

I have a project that's going to require a student graphic designer that can either work for modest compensation.

Really, I need a graphic designer to do the design and layout PLUS an illustrator!!

I'll need a cute beauty design logo that grabs attention, something cutesy like STILA (but obviously not STILA). You'll have 2 wks to craft the design and deliver final proof.

Please email for more details so I can give you the full scoop, thanks!! Please send a link of your work, so I can get a sense of your aesthetic, caliber. Students are encouraged to respond based on my rate of pay.

Thank-you!!

Keywords: graphic, design, cute, eye-catching, swanky, practical, PDF. illustrator, illustration.
  • Location: Oakland
  • it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
  • Compensation: no pay

We sent off a PDF the other day, got this reply today:
  • Our size spec for a half-page ad is 1350 x 1016 pixels at 300 dpi.  The image you sent is 1350 x 1025 — 9 pixels too high.  Did you want to chop 9 pixels off the top/bottom or shall I?
9 pixels too high WTF that's wrong in so many ways.

same idea. There's a checkbox in the security settings that allows printing or not. Anything to keep it from actually getting onto press. Altho I haven't tested this to see if it will print if you place it on another page and print that page.

The cool thing about PDFs is —and I don't use this enough— you can make them non-printable. So if a job needs to proof, you don't have all the information etc etc you can put dummy text in and make it unprintable so people have to come back to you and say "wtf" and you'll go "oh, right, I had a question about the date... give me the correct info and I'll get you a new PDF."

Not sure that's what happened in your case but it's always tempting to fill a spot with dummy text that looks too much like the real thing, and then no one catches it because it's right under everyone's nose...

STFU!  You with da Shithole Bar imagery!

I'm using two guys.  One did the handbills and banners (and will be doing Coroplast signage too), another guy did the poster.  They both have great ideas and layouts, but the poster guy is a little thin on the attention to detail aspects!  Gotta/wanna use them both going forward for a variety of reasons.  I shoulda caught the error on the poster, but I was already ragging on him on some text alignment issues, and in a rush, so ... shit happens.

... and an art director is born.

I have no advice for the future. Because some amount of that will always exist. But maybe the old trick of holding the thing up to a mirror and reading it backwards like that... it can make you look more closely at stuff like that.

E-yup!

Just had a designer put an event date well in the past on our gig poster.  Feb 2010 ?  WTF were you thinking dude?!

And we had it printed before catching the error.  Effity eff eff.  This must be why we don't pay them the big bucks.

This could also go in "things you thought today" as well as "annoying stuff..." but it has come to me, finally, that the only jobs anyone eats are the easy ones. If it's a little tricky at all, the customer signs off 9 times before it goes to press. If it's so simple it absolutely cannot be fucked up... oh yes it can!
