A real sad.  I well remember the exploits of the original Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in Car and Driver.  Two different articles.  One  Two

On a personal six degrees of separation thing, one of my sisters used to babysit for him when we lived in Corona del Mar back in the 60's.
