1963 – The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "I Saw Her Standing There" are released in the United States, marking the beginning of Beatlemania on an international level.
1914 – A series of unofficial truces occur across the Western Front to celebrate Christmas.
And sadly it's looking like my spending the afternoon with someone who was alive for that one is going to be postponed a little. Planning is kind of hour by hour with the old girl these days. At least we might get something other than Chinese this year.
You can tell it's still a tender subject because and still a political problem because there will be a writer blaming the gov't for not having any real infrastructure for warning or evacuating, another hanging it on the Canberra-appointed overseer for being powerless, and some chiding the entire city for ignoring warnings. But (unlike the US after Katrina) it sounds as if they took some major steps toward preventing another Tracy by implementing home rule, introducing modern building codes, developing a warning system...
edit: I have always liked the Hoodoo Gurus but never understood what the song Tojo was about. Until RP (not played in years, but) where in the song comments, someone told the story.
Tojo was the answer to a question on a rerun of a Christmas special of the music quiz show Spicks and Specks this week. Trick question - the contestants buzzed in early and answered, "Santa".
I think the media might be going easy on the government because the prime minister at the time, Gough Whitlam died about a month ago.
Watched a really good doco on Tracy last night. It was interesting because they made a point of showing the indigenous population context and memories of the event. I know a person who lived through it and it was one of those life defining events. It's hard to comprehend how remote Darwin was 40 years ago and the difficulty of the response.

40 years ago, Christmas Eve 1974: Cyclone Tracy does what Tojo never could.

1968 – Apollo program: The crew of Apollo 8 enters into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so. They performed 10 lunar orbits and broadcast live TV pictures that became the famous Christmas Eve Broadcast, one of the most watched programs in history.
1986 – Voyager, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, lands at Edwards Air Force Base in California becoming the first aircraft to fly non-stop around the world without aerial or ground refueling.
1808 – Ludwig van Beethoven conducts and performs in concert at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, with the premiere of his Fifth Symphony, Sixth Symphony, Fourth Piano Concerto (performed by Beethoven himself) and Choral Fantasy (with Beethoven at the piano).

I still have a NeXT Cube computer and the limited amount of software for it. We made all the IC's for it at Motorola so they sold them to us at cost. Unfortunately they are pretty useless now.
