On May 14, 1948, in Tel Aviv, Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion proclaims the State of Israel, establishing the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. Ben-Gurion became Israel's first premier. Jews worldwide and in the new state rejoice...

...and immediately are called upon to defend themselves, and for the first time since Judah Maccabee, Jewish arms are everywhere victorious.

Now, finally, time to settle peaceably with the Palestinians you have defeated.

It was on this day in 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, set out from St. Louis on their overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back.

In non-Wyoming history this day in history:

1812 Author Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England.

1990 The Soviet Union's Communist Party gave up its monopoly on power by agreeing to let other political parties compete for control of the country. A great day for liberty!

On February 7, 1964, Pan Am Yankee Clipper flight 101 from London Heathrow lands at New York's Kennedy Airport--and "Beatlemania" arrives.

Demi-important news: Ashton Kutcher turns 30 years old today.

Although Wiki says he died on 3.7, not 2.7.

33 years ago today,

the infamous Xenia Tornado hit a few miles from my family's home.

I still remember it vividly. When I got home from school it was hailing hail the size of golfballs...and we had to get in the basement and stay there all night.

The national guard was called in the next day and Nixon did a fly-over to determine its level of emergency.

The Shawnee, who once lived in the area, called that area "Land of the Devil Wind." It's always been quite the tornado magnet.
