It would also be nice to start by forcing those going South to work here for 4 years after completing their studies with OUR taxes, or to pay back the money equivalent to what it would have cost them to complete a doctorate in the states ;-)

Absolutely! I know a radiologist who always complains about his remuneration, but sure didn't gripe when he was paying tuition at UBC rather than down in the States.

Canadian health care is going to change huge in the next few years and I believe that it will eventually change to a two tier system (paid & public)

It is a simple fact of Supply and demand - Over 50% of nurses in Canada are over the age of 40 and over 35% are within 10 years of retirement

This exodus of nurses from the system will break its back, combine this with the shortness of doctors (who go south to make the real bucks) and you have a serious problem

The only way for the Canadian system to stay competitive is to initiate a two tier system where Nurses and Doctors can work a percentage in Paid system and a percentage in Public ... with ramping the percentages over time (this will increase the income of the doctors and nurses = this will bring more people into the system, or at least stem the tide of our health care professionals going south)

Fact is the two – tiered system has always been here (Name 1 NHL player that had to wait 6 months for ACL surgery like I had to)

The two tiered system is really the only way to save the public health care system. I am amazed and shocked how poor the US healthcare system is … and how little women get for maternity leave ….

It is such a shame that a country with so much gives so little to its people
Healthcare is a right – not a privalidge, but the public sectors Only chance of survival is to allow the people who work in that sector the chance to work private and public to attract new blood and increase the wealth of those who do such an important and vital service

Possibly less, actually. That's the system we have in Canada we expend slightly fewer tax dollars per capita than in the U.S. And some people here actually support introducing private clinics and insurance. Go figure...

The Health Care Crisis and What to Do About It
By Paul Krugman, Robin Wells
Slate.com sez about the article:
A review essay by Paul Krugman and Robin Wells makes a clear, comprehensive case for a single-payer, government-provided health insurance system. They predict that the unavoidable inefficiency of the current U.S. model will become unsustainable as medical progress continues to drive up the costs of health care, and they argue that switching to a single-payer system would allow all Americas to receive the same level of care the insured majority does now, at the same cost
