Mainly just got lucky to have the right conditions. The lightning woke me up in the middle of the night, so I grabbed my tripod and went outside. There was no rain or wind and it was warm, so I spent an hour taking long exposures, hoping to capture a sequence. It took a lot of trial and error to get the focus and exposure right - everything has to be manual: focus, time, aperture, and ISO. I’d open the shutter, wait for a strike or 1 minute, whichever came first, and repeat. Then some contrast adjustments and noise reduction in Lightroom.

awesome.. I have seen a lot of good lightning photos but this was one has special clarity and subtle shadows in the clouds. Really fantastic.
We just got back from a week at Lake Powell. At night, we went up on top of the houseboat and just laid there looking at ALL the stars and Milky Way. It was unbelievable! By no means a "professional" shot... by all means a beautiful neighborhood.
i was on a motorcycle trip camping in Moab in the mid 90‘s and had the same revelation. That was also the first time I ever saw a satellite, these days they're very common.

Very nicely done! I haven't used my tripod in so long I forgot where I put it.
