Doesn't surprise me.  Think about it:  The Internet is the ultimate safe haven, an environment where people are completely isolated from the forces of nature that remind people of where they stand in the universe.  Without any built-in humility mechanism, the Internet makes a great incubator for hubris.  Where else but the Internet will you find so many people with so much hubris that they believe that they are individually the most powerful beings in the universe?  And since the Internet isn't physical, there's no way for one person to prove that he or she is more powerful than another.

All Internet users are believers...in something.

Translation could be a whole 'nother conversation of course...

But yeah, there is a lot to "get" in the bible.  It takes a lot of study to go back to the Greek, and learn the customs of the time... because you gotta understand the context.  Especially the farther and farther we get from that time period and those customs, it's  more difficult to understand the context.

What makes me sad is that people don't move on to understanding who Jesus was... because I think that's the key to our current context... our current customs. 

WWJD is a bit trite... but it's a path to an enlightenment of sorts.  And I mean all that in a completely unreligious way.  If our goal is to be a more whole and loving and conscious human being, learning the life of Jesus is an excellent part of the journey.  And you have to know the bible to know Jesus.  The bible provides context.

Christian religions have drifted from CHRIST... and become followers of the bible... missing the whole point.  I think most of the bible is prologue... but the fulcrum and core and conclusion of the story is Jesus.

That is so beautiful...my greatest hope and I say this almost every day upon waking, is that more people, including myself, would understand and apply this ideal to their own lives and that because of it, the world would be a better place.  I have always admired Albert Einstein's words in this respect as well.  He was a beautiful man, wise and moral. He expressed great clarity and wisdom in his ideas, which ideas are very relevant today in this disturbed world. Here is an exercpt from his writings on humanity and true religiousness...

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1954)
