The hubby stubbed his toe yesterday (I resist the urge to call him The Stubby.)  Baby toe.

He's a tall man, and his feet are often numb.  He says it hurt like a sonofabitch when it happened, but doesn't seem to hurt much now.

That toe is black and blue and very swollen and WAY ugly..

My understanding is that there's no point blowing $200 we don't have on a doctor, 'cause it's a toe, they won't do anything for it anyway.

But is there anything to look out for?  Especially if he's a little numb, he might not notice if it's, I dunno, throbbing or something?

I'll have to watch the toe steathily, because he hates me watching out for him like that (this from the guy that let a mole grow to stage 2 melanoma, despite his wife's nagging to get it looked at.)  I also have to not tell him I'm getting advice from RP.

He is a grownup, it's his toe, and it's not going to fall off, so I recommend you just leave it and him alone. This does not require your watchful eye.

ARNICA GEL

Arnica is one of the most helpful medicaments I know.

I've always used those Arnica globules to milden any pain my daughter has had.

I'm glad you guys agreed with me; it just felt WRONG. It seems the hospital finally agreed with me as well and kept said (hypothetical, of course) patient overnight with some antibiotics. I feel much relieved.

(In a way. I mean, do I really trust them to continue to give acceptable medical care through the night? *sigh*)

So, say someone goes to the doctor at 11am for pain in the abdomen. A CT shows an extreme case of appendicitis. Emergency laparoscopic surgery at 2. Back in the room at 3:30. Is it reasonable for the hospital to send the patient home that same night? When the patient's temp has gone from 98.3 before surgery to 100.1 after?

That's a sad tale — but probably consistent with current practice at many, many hospitals in this era of cost containment and corporate medicine-for-profit.  If the appendix had not ruptured and was removed intact with no spillage of its contents into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity, and if the patient's vital signs had remained stable from completion of surgery until the time of discharge (most particularly heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation; the slight bump in temperature is to be expected after general anesthesia), then currently-acceptable discharge criteria were probably met.  First caveat:  the patient should have been receiving the appropriate perioperative IV antibiotic(s) that were started before the first incision and continued until at least final skin closure.  Second caveat:  the patient must not have had any serious accompanying conditions (unstable diabetes, serious heart disease, for example).

But I still think it stinks!

If your instincts say fight their decision, then it's probably good to fight it.

My un-medical opinion would be no, not with the fever.

I've had sinus BS now for three weeks.  It DEFINITELY started as a cold, now it's stuffy head all the time and runny nose at night before bed and in the AM.... and coughing up luuuuggers pretty regularly throughout the day (baad post nasal drip)

How do you know when it's allergies
When it's a cold
When it's an infection?
