First debris from Japanese earthquake/tsunami reaches Olympic Peninsula

by Arwyn Rice
Peninsula Daily News
December 14, 2011

PORT ANGELES — The first piece of debris that could be identified as washing up on the West Coast from the March 11 tsunami in Japan — a large black float — was found on a Neah Bay beach two weeks ago, Seattle oceanographers Curtis Ebbesmeyer and Jim Ingraham said Tuesday night.

Since then, the two researchers, known as DriftBusters Inc. — who have used flotsam to track wind and water currents in the Pacific since 1970 — have learned that the black, 55-gallon drum-sized floats also have been found on Vancouver Island.

Ebbesmeyer and Ingraham spoke to more than 100 people at Peninsula College and brought the float with them, along with examples of other items that may be showing up on beaches in the next year.

Tons of debris washed out to sea when a tsunami struck northern Japan after a massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake March 11.

About a quarter of the 100 million tons of debris from Japan is expected to make landfall on beaches from southern Alaska to California, possibly in volumes large enough to clog ports, Ebbesmeyer said...

We were in SB a couple of months ago and I have to agree. It was beautiful, both weather-wise and architecturally. L commented how there seemed to be so many more young people out and about than here.

Santa Barbara or bust, eh?! I understand that, but seriously, what about Carmel? Monterey? Very much like SB, just closer to SF instead of L.A.
Whatever/Wherever you decide to do/move to I know it'll be a winner. Personally, I think SB needs you back! :{#Sunny}

Weeeeell...it's my own fault for being picky. It was Santa Barbara or nothing. And it was too hard to find sustainable work there after looking for a year. The opportunities (and cost of living) started looking much more do-able up here. We'll see.....still need that job.

EDIT: Good to see you again!

Thursday, 11/17 evening-Sunday, 11/20 evening:  I'll be staying in San Jose with hopes to visit San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Saturday the 19th is my birthday so I'll be doing something to celebrate but I don't know what yet.
Sunday night, 11/20:  Taking a red eye home.

I won't have a car so I'll have to depend on someone driving me to meet you or you'll have to come to me.

 If I was making good money,  I would help stimulate the economy and be of assistance.
Alas... no fun around here.
