Knives were also not included as you were expected to have your own as most everyone carried a knife..

 
i have a fork that my grandmother, who was born in 1900, called her "granny fork."  it had been in her family for generations...it has three long tines, a wooden handle, and she always used it for cooking bacon.  that's what i use it for, too.  the tines are sharp enough to pierce the end of the bacon strip for easy turning.

this fork is "palpably" ancient....i love that my grandmother's grandmother had it, and handed it down.  the wooden handle is dark with the oil from generations of loving hands.
