the Cohen Bros are the ones that said he was the Rubik's Cube heir but drug-addled? I don't know about that, he did seem to be mellowed out from reefer and the freedom of being unemployed and considering circumstances and bad vibes from uptight people I think he conducted himself in a gentlemanly manner as a matter of fact I think the Dude is an excellent role model for today's hyper society (excuse me, my brownies need to be taken out of the oven)

Yeah, he didn't have any real income. He was a bit drug-addled, so I think he forgot that at times, which is why in that one scene he talked about being bumped up to another income bracket... from his non-existent income bracket. That's my theory, sticking to it.
