The obvious difference is that the US isn't a tiny country like NZ.

You can try to ignore or starve a cancer, but it's better to point it out/diagnose it and then fight it early on before it eats you up.

Bad publicity can only work for so long to his advantage before it starts to affect his reputation, especially when a majority of people already don't like the guy. It's still an irate minority that's barking, pretending to be a much bigger dog.

You know something called voting works all that stuff out.  Quite frankly, all of this melodrama is unnecessary imo. The only true winners are the media and their ratings.

there's the rub.. when you start fighting it on its own terms, it's won already. The best way to fight this cancer is to starve it of the publicity it feeds off.

I understand where you are coming from. But I have been down this road and I still don't know exactly the best way to deal with a political excrescence like Trump.

In NZ we got up and fought for civil rights and saw the greatest civil unrest the country has ever known. I think it was a watershed for the country and, in the end, actually made the country a hell of a lot better.

It was a case of extremism as political catharsis.. but the question here is does a country like the States really need to go through this to rediscover its founding principles? Is it really that morally sick?

Admittedly, Trump is repugnant. So why not just let the classroom clown do his little thing over there alone in the corner rather than make a big issue out of him. By focusing on him, you are empowering him.
It is precisely what he wants. Trump knows that to win the election, he has to destroy the middle ground occupied by Clinton. So that is exactly what he is doing. The protestors are only helping him get there.

There is no need to protest. just vote him out.
I fear though, that it is too late for that.

This whole development reminds me so much of NZ in 1981

... general sense of anger and dissatisfaction in the wider community but nobody really knowing who they can blame
... which gets mined by a demagogue
...who breaches normal tabus and releases all that frustration by focusing it on imaginary enemies
... this exhilarates his followers and appalls his detractors
.. loss of middle ground
.. divisiveness, violence spreads on a wide scale
.. and in the end the demagogue who started it all comes out as the champion of law and order and wins the election.

A cheap but very effective trick.

Michelle Fields who claimed that Trump's campaign manager had grabbed her, throwing her to the ground at a rally has been exposed as a fraud with the release of new video evidence.. The whole thing was a set up that the media gladly gave massive coverage. The attacks are coming thick and fast now, a desperate last ditch attempt to derail Trump. But it is only making him stronger as the public see how dirty and low his opponents will go.

Dirty tactics alright...
Donald Trump Jr. appears to have deleted several of his Tweets that falsely accused Boulger of being the Nazi-saluting Trump supporter without comment or explanation.
