And let's not forget the subsidy of letting industry save money by screwing over the environment.
Didn't Trump claim that the European VATs were trade barriers? A VAT has to be the most egalitarian flat tax, even though it is incredibly regressive and puts most of the burden on the poor.
Exactly, if we didn't have so many industrial entities doing their best to skirt regulations put into place in order to deal with unscrupulous people to begin with, imagine the amount of money that could be saved and diverted to better use and put where it's actually needed. Most regulations imposed on industry have been put into place because of the demonstrated need for protections against mass pollution and reckless destruction of our environment, not just to hinder and control big business.

The skinny: "Double-negative Don" will say any old sh!^. He changes his tune and contradicts himself from day to day. Just ask Vladimir Putin. If he tweeted once or twice about wanting completely free trade, it doesn't mean a damn thing. 1. We all hope that the visit to the oncologist went well. Fingers crossed... 2. "So you keep saying back up what I say, or in other words shut up and don't post if you cannot provide citations to prove you are not an uninformed Trump bot ..."
Yes, I keep saying things to the effect of "back up what you say." No, I do NOT say in other words " or shut up" or that you're "an uninformed Trump bot." I try to be polite and civil on these boards now, although at times I have been... withering (trying, anyway). 2a. You're supporting a world-class liar and crazy man. I keep writing this, but again: if anyone of us had to deal with a person like Trump in our everyday lives, we wouldn't trust him an inch. If you or anyone tells me Trump's going to do this or Trump said that or here's the straight story about Trump, it's only reasonable to ask for verification. 3. Trump tweets (perhaps just once) that he wants an end to all tariffs, barriers and subsidies. Problem is, he's locked into a tit-for-tat escalation of tariffs that he cannot win. If his new tariffs are a negotiating tactic, he's screwing over American companies and workers and he's not having much effect on the Chinese.

In the meantime, he is doing irreparable harm to our trade relations. Like in retail, it's exponentially harder to regain a (trade) customer once lost, and you never get them all back.

This so called trade war we are engaged in ? Are you even aware that Trump's ultimate goal is to end tariffs completely ? He has to make it so ridiculous that everyone can no longer deny who is zooming who and how. Then we can play nice and say why don't we just make all this stuff go away ? And this is the best possible time for us to do this. Our economy is zooming and we can outlast everyone else, if that is what it takes. The goal is worthy. A tariff free world. Kinda like what Reagan did to the USSR with Starwars. We have the power to bankrupt everyone. Remember that Trump was a business major at Wharton. Say what you want, but you can't phone it in there to get a degree. You have to do the work. He may act stupid, but it's an act. It's disarming and also confusing which plays right into his hands. People tend to pay more attention to crazy people than normal people. But no one ever wants to find out how crazy they are. The smart ones will find out what they want and be more willing to do what they want just to get them to go away. I learned this in my 20's while working the streets of Cleveland for 10 years in the 70's and early 80's. Trump is a two time billionaire and now POTUS. I don't know very many stupid people who have accomplished that. "This so called trade war we are engaged in ? Are you even aware that Trump's ultimate goal is to end tariffs completely ?"
You're killing me here...I'm gonna die from laughing so hard...Trump is trying to end all tariffs, huh? What he's done so far is the equivalent of wanting to fly a rocket to the moon by digging a deep hole and jumping in with a basket of dynamite. (Maybe he's trying to illegally emigrate to China that way, I don't know). I could ask you to back up the notion that Trump wants to end tariffs, but there's a chance that Trump actually said something like that once or twice. Trump says a lot of things, though, and his statements often contradict each other. He lies and he changes tack all the time. Combine those tendencies with his lack of knowledge, his lack of preparation and the crappiness of his economic advisors and you have a hellacious mess. His tariffs don't make sense in terms of hurting the other countries and they're not really helping the domestic industries he's trying to help. I don't make these things up. Its hard to back up things like that that I have learned from simply paying attention along the way. So you keep saying back up what I say, or in other words shut up and don't post if you cannot provide citations to prove you are not an uninformed Trump bot ... Sorry, that is not the case. The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right.
