It's this last statement that I have a problem trying to reconcile. Can someone as ham-handed, naive and incompetent as Trump be able to try and "control" an investigation without crossing the fine line of "obstructing" as well? I guess we will see... but I have my doubts.

Lastly, McGahn saying that Trump did not go beyond his legal authorities as president is a very subjective statement simply thrown in there to appease Trump and give him something to Tweet about in response to any objections thrown Trump's way. I also believe it had to be said as a cover-your-ass statement because if McGahn truly believed that Trump was overstepping his authority and did nothing about it... he could be in trouble as well.

If so they are the only ones in this administration.

I like to imagine the $hit will finally get so deep, there will be a mass exodus from the WH. Those people will need jobs after this is all over, right? The ones not staying at the Graybar, I mean.

The word "incompetence" is going to define the Trump administration for posterity:

President Trump’s lawyers do not know just how much the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, told the special counsel’s investigators during months of interviews, a lapse that has contributed to a growing recognition that an early strategy of full cooperation with the inquiry was a potentially damaging mistake.

The president’s lawyers said on Sunday that they were confident that Mr. McGahn had said nothing injurious to the president during the 30 hours of interviews. But Mr. McGahn’s lawyer has offered only a limited accounting of what Mr. McGahn told the investigators, according to two people close to the president.

That has prompted concern among Mr. Trump’s advisers that Mr. McGahn’s statements could help serve as a key component for a damning report by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, which the Justice Department could send to Congress, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers realized on Saturday that they had not been provided a full accounting after The New York Times published an article describing Mr. McGahn’s extensive cooperation with Mr. Mueller’s office. After Mr. McGahn was initially interviewed by the special counsel’s office in November, Mr. Trump’s lawyers never asked for a complete description of what Mr. McGahn had said, according to a person close to the president.

...

But Mr. McGahn, who as White House counsel is not the president’s personal lawyer, has repeatedly made clear to the president that his role is as a protector of the presidency, not of Mr. Trump personally.

...

The Times reported that Mr. McGahn, over at least three interviews, laid out how Mr. Trump had tried to ensure control of the special counsel investigation. Mr. McGahn gave a mix of damaging and favorable information about the president, but he said Mr. Trump did not go beyond his legal authorities as president.

BTW, you might find this op-ed amusing.

The purpose of interrogating Strzok for 10 hours Thursday (after 11 hours in a private session) was clear: ritual humiliation. In fairness, the vast majority condemned Strzok over his texts to his lover without invoking the affair. But then there was Rep. Karen Handel (R-Ga.), picking up where Gohmert left off. “Engaging in the kind of behavior that you have been engaging in, especially with the extramarital affair, it opens up an agent to exploitation and even blackmail,” she proclaimed.

If Republicans really want to go there, they’ll need to investigate the vulnerabilities of some of Strzok’s inquisitors on their glass-house committee:

Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.), who needled Strzok about “text messages with your friend.” DesJarlais, according to divorce filings, had multiple extramarital affairs and encouraged his ex-wife and a patient with whom he had an affair to get abortions.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who is battling the allegations of former Ohio State wrestlers who said he ignored sexual abuse while coaching there.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), who has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over payments to a former staffer accused of sexual harassment. Other members of the panel are Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.), who was sentenced last year to community service and anger-management classes for assaulting a reporter, and Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.), whose infidelity as governor of South Carolina made national headlines.

Judging Strzok also would have been Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.), but he recently resigned after revelation of a taxpayer-funded sexual harassment settlement.

And there’s Gohmert himself, who defended Jordan against the wrestlers’ allegations and who remained on Trump’s leadership team through the “Access Hollywood” scandal.

Looks like Pete's funding is going pretty well after five days—just checked it and it's at $437.5k.

Sure, such texts cost Peter Strzok his 22-year career with the FBI, but they also seem to have garnered the disgraced former agent a lot of support – enough to raise more than $325,000 for his legal expenses in one day on a GoFundMe page.

The page, launched Monday by "Friends Of Special Agent Peter Strzok," initially sought $150,000 to be "put into a trust dedicated to covering Pete's hefty – and growing – legal costs and his lost income."

But that sum was reached quickly and the target amount was later raised to $350,000. Since then, the requested sum has been raised to $500,000 and the donations have climbed to more than $428,000.

...

The page has drawn in donations from more than 11,000 donors. The largest was a donation of $2,000.

...

Strzok's GoFundMe success is not unprecedented. Earlier this year a similar fundraising campaign for McCabe raised more than $500,000.
