Looks like it will all work out.  I told them I'd only take a drug test if and when we agreed to further employment.  The hours in question have been approved and I should be getting a paycheck in the next week or so.  The firm I contracted through is still saying I need to take the test, but they say that is because there is further work.  I haven't found anybody at the company I contracted to that has a requisition out.  We'll see what happens next...

To me, the really harmful things are the prescription medicines that people can get addicted to nowadays. I've had two people in my family get addicted to Lortabs (basically, legalized morphine) because doctors hand them out like candy. Luckily, both of these people are now off of it, but it's put my family through 10 years of hell. When I graduated in '87, taking a test was a given. It was a simple fact that a newbie was not gonna get hired without one. Now, I like to think I would stand on principle. But I'd really rather not have to test my resolve...

Marty, you're right about the economics - I've had to make that compromise before, as it seems to be one of the costs of working as an engineer, since sometime in the late 80's. To the best of my recollection, the company you and I worked at was the only place I've worked since then that didn't make it a requirement.

i remember one of my older colleagues, when I first started working after college, reminiscing about the good old days when engineers were considered professionals, like a doctor or lawyer. We've fallen a long way.
