I have two black ice incidents. first was in a car. hit, spun, landed in a snowbank. no injuries or damage to the car. although a truck had to pull me out.
the second was on a set of concrete steps. the air was above freezing, I thought it was just wet when I stepped down. took a header down 5 steps to the landing. banged my shin u p pretty good but nothing broke. it was really hard trying to get up those icy steps back to the house.

OUCH..

My black ice story: while living in DFW we got one of those bad ice storms. Days later, I'm driving home, the roads are clear but it's still cold. I went under one of those really wide overpasses at the big airport. In the middle I saw what looked like water, and instinctively took my foot off the gas. Slid over the ice safely, but the next guy was not so lucky: I heard tires squeal and looked in the rearview to see his truck slide sideways and hit a car coming the other way. Glancing blow, nobody hurt, but still it was amazing.

I hate winter.  {#Lol}  I felt so bad....sort-of, but I stood at my kitchen window and watched people skidding down the hill and running off the road in front of my house until they finally closed the road.  It was very entertaining to watch.  I'd already been through my hell so I had a good laugh watching others go through it.   Awful, I know.

Here in Austin we used to have a place that would flood sometimes, not far from my old office. When we had a torrential downpour, as soon as it stopped raining we'd walk down there and watch people try to drive through it. It wasn't really dangerous or anything, it was just entertaining watching the cars start to float when the idiots got in deep enough. Plus there was a beer joint there that would give away beers to 'save' them from the flooding...

Anyone not used to winter driving, before you ever drive on a road, spend some time on an open area such as a parking lot.
Learn what it feels like to handle your vehicle on the slick stuff.
And don't go out if you don't have to.

Be careful.  {#Meditate}

Prolly all it does it change the line pressure in the transmission to soften the shifts. Nearly worthless, really.

H for Holy and S for sh*t.  That's what it should stand for.  That's all I could muster.

Those help before the skid...If the rear starts going to the right you have to steer to the right to get things straight again and then gently back to the left to get straight on  the road again... I was able to learn this in an empty strip mall parking lot one morning after being pushed across 5 lanes of traffic by the strand trailer I was pulling with a flatbed in the snow in lovely Erie,PA.{#Eek}
