It's cool-ish that they actually promoted it as some sort of responsible host cocktail: they won't get nabbed by Johnny Law for smelling of hooch.

It made me wonder if there was a specific time when vodka became a more popular liquor choice in the US — late 1950s-early '60s?  I wonder if part of the pitch was not having your breath reeking of whiskey.  Cool jacket that guy has.

We have two. One holds about 350 and has basic kitchen, a big rollup door for loading in stuff, tables & chairs for 300, and a good audio system for speakers or music. $75 plus cleaning deposit. The other is smaller, 75 capacity standing inside, plus an outdoor area, kitchen, free wifi and it usually has an art gallery show hanging behind glass. It's nice. Also $75. So come on out!

edit: Where'd your post go?

I took it down because I finally found my answer after including community centers in my search—two of which I used to run past (in my old suburb here)—and that led to other discoveries. I wonder if they come equipped with a sound system to plug into? Probably not. Maybe some of my rock-n-roll friends in town will have to hook me up with something.

 But thanks!

Are there still such things as party venues/banquet centers where they just take a safety deposit and hand you the keys and have clean-up & closing rules? And not control over everything you might want - catering, a fee for bringing your own alcohol, a fee for someone who has to serve the alcohol, etc.?

Or do I have to resort to ugly church halls/fraternal order places that may or may not let non-members rent?

Every time I try to do an Internet search for such a place, it only brings up the big-time venues—-some of whom are reluctant to waste a good Saturday in October on a birthday rather than a big-bucks wedding.
