Kenneth Brannaugh did a superb job as Sir Laurence Olivier, too.

But not everyone will. I remember when everyone and their brother and their dog thought "The Piano" was all that——and I found it creepy and disturbing. As well, "Dead Man Walking," although VERY well acted, left me with the most disturbing rape images that I was really sorry I went to see it. So.....again, not everyone's cup of tea.

But I wanted to suggest that maybe "what did I learn from this?" isn't the best question to ask after seeing a film. I think "was it a good story? Was it well-told? Did I enjoy it?" might be a better approach it.

I'm not posting this to be quarrelsome, but I am perplexed by the view of The Descendants as a great film and am wondering why so many others view it that way. What am I missing?  I posted this comment a month or so ago:

It's a decent film, but I did not think that much of it, and, frankly, did not even enjoy it all that much. It's a decent film, with lots of beautiful scenery, and George Clooney does a decent acting job. I see where it is being lauded and considered a favorite for best drama or best picture as we move into award season - and I don't get why.   

I heard a critic say that it really isn't a comedy nor is it a drama.  It's a hybrid. I guess I would agree with that, but it appears to be more of a drama in the slice-of-life category.  I did not find the humorous parts to be all that funny. On the drama side of the equation, I just did not connect with a message from the film.  I usually assess more serious films by asking: What lesson or message did I take away from that movie?  For this one, I can't isolate anything that I took away from it.

I finally saw The Descendants today. If George Clooney wins that Oscar, he'll deserve every ounce of it. His performance was heart-achingly compelling...and he could do everything with one expression than he could with ten lines.
