Have you tried a test user to see whether the problem is in or out of your user folder?

Anyway, 9.1.1 was supposed to address some of what 9 broke. Have you gone to 9.1.1 yet?

I hear ya....and give the jeans asswipe a shot for others. I never learn: don't upgrade iTunes...that makes it go from bad to worse everytime. My problem right now: I purchased 3 tunes and next thing I know, every damn tune I ever purchased is downloading...a slow process even with dsl...and I have no clue as to how to stop it...forget contacting Apple, they suddenly speak a tongue unknown to man when you ask about a problem...and then there's the world's worse quality control...but that's for another iTunes bitch session. I have a super geek coming out, the dude works miracles, to look at my whole system and strip out the uneeded and the garbage that micrsosoft likes to stuff into its systems, etc..

It's a PC, so that might be slightly different. The iTunes help pages are not that bad, maybe I'm just too impatient because I get frustrated. Or maybe I just need a new computer, it gets too much for the old gal. It could be a corrupt library. If you fire up iTunes while holding the shift key (I think that's how it works on a pc. I'm a Mac user) you can then select the option to create a new library. From this new blank library, find "add to library" (its under the file menu on a Mac) Navigate to your media/music folder, and select it. This will build a new library indexing to your current music location. Before doing this you'll want to uncheck the preference for copying files to the media folder just for this process. (although I think it won't matter since the music won't be moving either way....but just in case)

If you're on a Mac, I use the File menu command, scroll to "add to library", and then navigate to the folder that has the data files in it. That creates the name of the files in the iTunes library. That should remain permanent - although the files still live in the same folder that you just found them in.
Have you tried that part too?
I'm stumped.

Edit: maybe it's this:
"Then from your menu, choose "library" and the sub-command "consolidate" the library."
So, I do that in iTunes? Have to find out what consolidate is in Dutch!

Then you want Super Remove Dead Tracks.Doug's Applescripts are invaluable for getting things organized. Really great. I regularly use "use track prefix for track number" and then "remove n characters from front or back" to eliminate unnecessary tagging from things. And there are plenty more there, obviously. "Proper English title capitalization" is another of my faves.

1) decide/prefer where you want your media files to live 2) make sure that the actual files - not simply a reference to them - exist in the chosen folder, and not scattered around your hard drive 3) ask the program to gather up the files, consolidate those copies into the chosen folder
Better. Thanks dmax.

That is really confusing. Can't iTunes just have a button that says 'Put all my music in one milk-crate and get rid of all duplicates. And don't effen forget where you put that milk-crate.'?
