You have to make certain they are Mp3 files and not Apple Loessless files. You can choose how to import songs from Cds in the preferences panel.

I copied this from the iTunes help files:

To create an MP3 CD:
Select the playlist containing the songs you want to burn to the CD, and make sure all the songs you want to include have a checkmark beside them.

Insert a blank disc and click Burn Disc.

Select MP3 CD as the Disc Format and click OK.

no, it makes an mp3 file. you can select the bit rate in preferences or tell it not to import the cd - there's a couple options of things it will do automatically when you insert a cd. I always import using a high bit rate - 320.

I pop a disc into my computer and it says "do you want to import..."    Does it create an aac file which is, I thought, proprietary?
