Thanks Red_Dragon.  I found this article that caught me up:  The socialists are coming! White House sounds alarm at rise of the left

Apparently the anti-socialist economics report does not mention that the Nordic social democracies perform so well because they do freemarket capitalism so well.

People in the USA believe in well-defined economic property rights except they also believe in important ethnic, racial and other sectarian exceptions to those rights.   I suppose that is in part due to the glorification of ethnic cleansing in popular American culture.

What do the 'Yellow Vest' protesters and Arab Spring protesters have in common?

France’s Tax Burden Now the Highest of Any OECD Country

The ratio increased to 46.2 percent, pushing France above Denmark, which had led the ranking for more than a decade.

.. and they seem to have a pretty simple progressive tax scale:

For those who are resident in France there are five tax rates and bands on net taxable income earned in 2018 (taxable in 2019), as follows:

Income ShareTax Rate
Up to €9,9640%
Between €9,964 - €27,51914%
Between €27,519 - €73,77930%
Between €73,779 - €156,22441%
Above €156,22445%

is there a breakdown of income and taxes paid?

maybe by percentage

here is income growth by percentile:

it's the green curve that is relevant now, but also note the pre-war slide in the earning of the upper percentiles. France has a tradition of "levelling" inequality.
