Yep, there's good and bad about dams. My Dad was active against the Manapouri hydropower scheme down in Fiordland, which I can understand in retrospect. But actually, visiting it now, I think it is remarkably low impact for such a large hydropower scheme*. I mean, nature herself is pretty good at damming rivers at short notice. And we need power from somewhere. Though to be fair to my Dad, he would have preferred to live in a tent in the mountains.

*oops, I stand corrected.  They never did raise the lake level due to the protests, instead diverting the outflow through the power station. A win for Dad!! Never knew.
