On "Wheel of Fortune" they spot you RSTLN and E, so if I'm looking to knock a lot of those out, STERN would be good. But I assume they'll never use a word like that, so I usually try to knock out 2 of the consonants at most, a less common one that's not XJZ and one or two vowels. But yeah I have to mix it up and try a new start word each time.

Based on the number of 5 letter words in English, you are correct that some combination of those letters and various vowels is the most likely combination to return yellow or green boxes on the first guess. I read an article back in December/January about it, primarily as a way to use the software (Knime)...not really about the game. I assume that the list of words in the game (I assume most of you have had the "that's not a word in our list" experience) doesn't include all English 5-letter words, but likely follows the same pattern.
